New York Mayor Bill de Blasio Booed at Police Graduation Ceremony

http://abcnews.go.com/US/york-mayor-bill-de-blasio-booed-police-graduation/story?id=27879896

New York's Mayor Bill de Blasio was greeted with boos and catcalls at a graduation ceremony for new police officers today where he told the cadets they can be "part of the solution."

The rude greeting came just days after police officers turned their backs on the mayor at the funeral of a slain officer.

The mayor's comments were the first to police since this weekend when hundreds of officers turned their backs on an outdoor monitor showing de Blasio speaking at the funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos. Ramos and Officer Wenjian Liu were ambushed in Brooklyn Dec. 20 while sitting in their squad car. The gunman later killed himself. Liu's funeral will be held next weekend.

De Blasio presided over the graduation of the nearly 900 cadets at a ceremony in Madison Square Garden. Boos and catcalls cascaded down upon the mayor when he was introduced. There was a smattering of polite applause.

At one point de Blasio said "you didn't create problems," and someone in the crowd shouted audibly "No, you did!" The recruits were stoic.

More grandstanding, I see. Reminds me of the "You Lie!" directed at the President. Childish. Jeuvenile. Pathetic. Just what the MEdia likes.

Why, exactly, would you boo someone speaking at your graduation? 'I wish you well' - Boo? 'You are the hope of the future' - Boo?

2. The NYPD will come to rue the day that they chose to become a political party.

Do some agree with them? Of course. But they are responsible for the safety and security of ALL of the citizens of NY City, not just the ones that share their political views. They are virtually guaranteeing that at least half of the population can no longer take them seriously, and that can only serve to make even more people disrespect them, which will give them even more reason to bust heads and shoot people.

This will not end well. The horse is out of the barn.

13. They're many things, but they're definitely not a political party.

The first time the cops signed letters for the mayor to not be invited to their funeral was while Giuliani was Mayor. The relationship between Giuliani and the PBA was so bad, Giuliani didn't even ask for their endorsement when he ran for President. And in 2004, Lynch and the PBA threatened to protest the RNC convention while it was being held in NYC.

During the campaign, and I don't have the quote in front of me, but if i remember correctly, Lynch said something like "His (Giuliani's) only credentials lie in the clean up after a terror attack."

In another instance under may Bloomberg, Lynch led a contingent of his cops, and show'd up at Bloomberg's vacation home and protested with loudspeakers at 1:00 in the morning.

Lynch's claim to fame is that his cops pay has increased more than 50% while he's been their President. With all that, NYPD cops are still underpaid when compared to the Port Authority police.

Have to dig more into that one. I consider myself a news junkie, but I didn't know of the previous relationships with the mayoral office and the police.

Maybe they're their own political party...which is perhaps even more frightening.

6. I can't imagine that a big-city mayor can't get even for things like this.

I hope de Blasio kneecaps the NYPD for this sort of public arrogance.

that De Blasio can do certain things with their contracts that would amount to a backdoor flat-lining of benefits.

8. Other reports are that only a few booed, a few cheered, only a dozen of 900 turned their backs.

De Blasio Gets Mixed Reaction At NYPD Graduation Ceremony
Applause, Boos & Catcalls From Crowd

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/12/29/de-blasio-to-speak-at-nypd-graduation-ceremony-amid-tensions/

"A few people in the crowd also turned their backs to de Blasio. Most, however, applauded politely when he finished speaking.

The graduation comes two days after hundreds of officers turned their backs to a video monitor as they watched de Blasio eulogize Officer Rafael Ramos at his funeral in Queens.

Speaking Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton condemned the move, calling it “very disrespectful.”

“I certainly don’t support that action,” he said. “That funeral was held to honor Officer Ramos and to bring politics, to bring issues into that event, I think, was very inappropriate.”

Glad we live in a country where one is able to do that.

Speakers have been booed before, and they will again.

No big deal.
