Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDoes America treat Black People fairly?
It is my opinion that America has been treating minority populations, especially Black and Native Americans like dirt for Centuries. Now, I have noticed lately that many here seem to think that our efforts at assimilation are funny and use our attempts to discuss Cultural Appropriation to mock us and accuse us of Appropriating White culture by assimilating to the dominant culture.
I do not think that is fair. If we do not assimilate to the dominant culture, we suffer serious consequences, like not being employable. I have worked in industries where looking more white, like having long, straight, hair, wearing certain clothing and accessories actually increased my pay and helped me succeed. Wearing an afro to a job interview is not helpful. You may think it doesn't matter, but it does.
Since there are no consequences for being themselves, many black people are offended when members of the majority adopt cultural mannerisms of our culture. There is a history there if you choose to look. Stolen people with stolen identities forming a culture among those who stole them, their labor, their children are loathe to give up anything else to the majority who have taken so much from them already, and still don't like or accept them as equals after all these centuries. There is it. That's my take on it. I could go further, but I don't want to make this too long.

(19,497 posts)That's a statement I can wholeheartedly support.
The world being such as it is there will always be those who are cruel and part of the expression of the cruelty will be mocking people for anyone of any number of superficial identifiers: skin color, gender, sexual identity, religious faith, etc. Such people can never be removed from our community, they are a burden to be endured.
I believe the greatest counter to these benighted souls is for the rest of us to simply be who we are. We won't convert the hateful but the delight and wonder of who we are will shine bright enough to overcome the poison they might otherwise spread to others.
And it's better if we just go on about our own lives rather than giving the haters the power they cannot possess on their own.
Life is better for us that way.
But how to know if something is someone's sincere effort at art, is it respectful? Does ti bring a wider appreciation to a broader audience?
That's what I want to see happen.
Then there are things such as Mel Brooks' film Blazing Saddles. I wonder if such a film could be made in this day and age even though the entire point was to give racism the skewering it so richly deserves.
I think the pornography standard may be in play here: We'll know it when we see it.

(111,359 posts)and saw suburban white kids with saggy shorts and backwards ball caps with boom boxes and trying to keep up with NYC rappers, I had to giggle a bit.
However, if they go on to write it and manage to write some good stuff, hooray for them.
Kids will try to imitate cultures they're not part of and most of the time, it looks like parody and we get to laugh at them. A few of them might have the talent and put in the time to do a creditable job in that cultural art form and that's a good thing.
I remember the resistance toward using black dancers in ballet. Now most US companies have a few black faces among the sea of white, at least if they go for the best dancers instead of merely the whitest, and nobody considers it a parody of "white culture." Likewise, a few white dancers have gone on to do decent break dancing.
Art has always been very fluid, inspiration being found across many cultures. Culture, itself, isn't that immutable, as the American experiment has found across both North and South America.
I'd have to say it's not a question of treading lightly as it is of treading competently.

Who does it hurt? Real people. People who deserve the same respect as anyone else, people we've (we, the dominant culture members) been, as you put it earlier, treating like dirt for centuries. If we can't even stop disrespecting them and ignoring their pain, how will we ever advance to treating them the same as we do ourselves.

(589 posts)As to your point of dress and appearance in a job interview ?
That goes for anyone , White , Black etc...
bravenak
(34,648 posts)The point is that it goes for everybody because the majority says so.
Do you know how much work goes into getting an afro turned into silky locks?
For me, 2 hours and I cannot get it wet.
My sister? 5 fucking hours!! Her hair is down to her butt.
For people who do NOT have naturally long hair like ourselves? 8 hours and 500 - 2000 dollars for a weave. I used to lay tracks for people, glue or sewn. The hair is over 100 dollars per bag and it takes multiple bags of hair. Then you have to braid synthetic hair in cornrows in a pattern so that the hair falls properly, leaving out enough hair in the front to cover the tracks. Then you sew or glue them in carefully. How is that the same for everybody?!?! Not the same for us. If the majority had to do all that to get a job, they'd change the rules.

An interviewer very rarely picks the best person for the job.
They have their own conceived prejudice when you make that first impression .
I do understand what you are saying about the hair thing though but I believe that's done
by the individual more so because of current trends in fashion.
That's the style now that they see movie stars , singers , celebrities wearing
If all Black female celebrities went back to the natural look then you would see the style through out the country change.

America, in their own time. We have no way to reset that period in history...reparations are unacceptable
to many, unfortunately. Reparations would not remove the racism but it would be an official
record of attempting to right a wrong which is a powerful statement for the people of this nation.
The genocide advanced upon Native Americans on their own land due to their lack
of military power created a hole that remains open today. The idea that people stolen for
another mans benefit..slaves, and another populace killed and displaced for their land
has had continual negative consequences..we treat minorities terribly today because we do
not completely recognize and accept the responsibilities of our past. Not to the degree that
we should..imo.
Sadly, there are Americans who believe we're done with racism as an issue, since we elected a black man to be
POTUS. It is also shameful that no Native American is expected to run for POTUS and win.

(34,648 posts)From the cultural appropriation one.
138. "Being left out all the time leads you to make your own culture."
Specifically, what "culture" have you and others created? Would hip-hop/ghetto rap be part of that creation? Is this "culture" helping or hurting blacks, black males in particular? For example, if two young men show up for an interview, one dressed professionally and the other dressed with his pants hanging below his ass crack, who will get hired?
I've worked in DC and surrounding areas for decades and see successful blacks every day. PG County, Maryland is nearly 65% black, and according to Wikipedia, "the 70th most affluent county in the United States by median income for families and the most affluent county in the United States with an African-American majority." What are they doing right?
I work in the IT industry -- lots of Indians (Hindu, Muslim and Sikh on my team) -- and have to say they seem to have assimilated beautifully, without losing their "culture." What are they doing right?
A small but vocal minority (no pun intended) on DU likes to chalk up black woes to racist whities, but at what point are *some* blacks culpable for their failures?
Why me? I'm cross posting that on my blog in one form or another. These folks are too much.

(10,497 posts)While not literally possible, it is possible to get a good sense of what it is like if you took more of an interest in black friends, co-workers etc. It would be truly eye opening! I am white, grew up and live here in S.E. Texas. I went to an all black Middle School and experienced racism from the other end. I was treated poorly to say the least, just due to the color of my skin. Our school was falling apart, books and equipment were hand-me-downs from the mostly white Middle School in the same District, and the teachers had given up, or at least didn't want to be there. No way was public education the same for whites and blacks.
My second wife is black and from long talks with her parents and her very sweet 93 year old "Auntee" I heard first hand accounts of Jim Crow that made me ashamed for my race. I am amazed that her family has accepted me with such open arms after what they have been through. I can't say that I could have let it go so completely. While many things are much better than they were, progress has seemed to have slowed dramatically.
Being white, I also hear pretty regularly how tired Whites are of hearing the cry of "racism" at every turn. The problem is, the people doing the complaining either have no clue, or are the ones perpetuating the problem. People assume that Blacks have the same opportunity as Whites, they just squander it. While there are some cultural issues that hold Blacks back, they are ones of institutionalized poverty, not of any inferiority to any other race. If you are "tired of hearing about race" then finally help to do something about it, or at least have a better understanding of the dynamics.

(17,997 posts)I would like to add that I find it hilarious that people actually complain about people of color "assimilating" or "appropriating" or whatever the hell you want to call it. I also find it hilarious that anyone can dictate to anyone else what they're allowed to be upset about.
It's quite like someone saying, "I really can't stand you but don't take that personally."
People bitch and moan about other people who have anything but English as a first language, and other similar things. They complain that any immigrant is even here, except for their own family. Those are usually the same people who don't want people of color to "act white" and don't think there's anything wrong with taking parts of a culture, that they often can't even admit is a separate culture, E.G. "you're people have been here for 300 years so it's American culture. You don't own it."
Most importantly, I find it absolutely reprehensible and complete and total bullshit that any person, with an I.Q. over 50, has the audacity to say that a person of color, especially a black person, does not suffer oppression in the USA. Any person that discounts that unique experience, and it is nothing that any white person could ever imagine, and tries to tell a person of color how they should react, act or that the experience is the same for all, is a liar and/or as dumb as they come.
Not here on DU, of course.

(50 posts)One only has to look at the millions of young black males locked up throughout the country to realize that black people in this country simply don't have it as good as the average white American. And with the resurgence of the right wing movement in recent years, I fear that the situation will only worsen in the future.

(10,893 posts)when I went to your blog and saw the "Dear Bravenak, Why do Black people smoke so much weed?" and "Why do black people shoot craps all the time? What is craps?" questions. The dumb was intense for both of those questions, especially the 2nd one where the person asked why we "shoot craps" all the time, and then goes on to ask what craps is.

(34,648 posts)Somebody asked me that in person. The looked quite confused trying to figure out what to say and how to say to.
The people he was looking at weren't even shooting craps. They were using six dice. They were playing Ten Thousand.

(10,893 posts)just when I thought it couldn't get more absurd. What's in the water that person is drinking?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)There was stupid in the water. Nobody was even drinking alcohol or anything.
I blame the mild winter here. Usually we wouldn't have even been out side, but it hasn't really gotten below freezing much. He mighta been drunk though. There is a problem with that up here.

(11,833 posts)The number of black people in prison and black unemployment rates are just two examples that we have a long way to go toward racial equality.

(34,648 posts)I'm starting there. Prison is the new slavery. That's my title, don't steal...

(11,833 posts)I won't steal I promise. Prison is indeed the new slavery. Or how about Black is the New Orange.

You might be right. I bet I can scare up some material from my post archives. Lots of stuff there. Good thinking.

(11,833 posts)You probably already have a lot of great reading material. But I'd like to suggest a couple of books in case you haven't read them. Soledad Brother by George Jackson and The Crime of Punishment by Karl Menninger. And of course Angela Davis. All from a long time ago, but with pertinent information (just not the statistical stuff, which has actually gotten worse not better since they were written).
Free the people now.

(34,648 posts)My kindle list is growing, but I got some gift cards for xmas.

(11,833 posts)What kind of kindle do you have? Do you like it? I had one a long time ago and loved it. But it was the cheapest one and I stupidly got one that didn't connect to the net. Can't remember too well.
Also, can you find those books and others for free on kindle. Isn't there some free library or something like that?
I'm thinking of getting a new one. It would save money and I love reading from a kindle.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)All are kindle fires and they all work decently. The newest one is the best, it takes photos, has games, and surfs the net along with being a reader. My kids and my husband use those. I just use my kindle app that I have on my iPad.
If you go on Amazon and choose a category select kindle , then whatever type of book like dystopian, then sort it by lowest to highest. The free books will be first. There are thousands. They have most classics for free. I have Oliver Twist in English, German, and French and Don Quixote in English and Spanish. I think I may own about 300 free books and a couple thousand that I bought.
I no longer purchase paper books.
They have a sharing program to where you can lend and borrow books from other people with Kindle Accounts. I haven't used it yet, since I'm behind on my reading.
If you learn how, you can borrow my books.

(11,833 posts)I love reading too. I can speed read if I want to (I love speed reading here at DU), but on some things like graphic novels & comics I enjoy taking my time. It's interesting how they've improved all this stuff immensely since I first got (and later gave away) my first kindle. I was just looking at prices there at amazon, and may go with a simple paper white when I'm ready to buy one.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)They sell graphic novels for kindle too, though. I have one by GRRM. The sworn sword. Enjoy your gadget when you get it. I can't live without mine anymore.

(505 posts)If I am not prejudiced, I am cautious. I am careful to not give offense, and since I offend a lot of people and take for granted that I offend people, I avoid black people so I do not have to worry about offending them. But we are culturally different and it is hard to avoid giving that difference your attention.
I had a black girl friend once, and she was a pretty good fit, and she wanted to go white and I was like super man back then. But I let it out to an aunt that I was thinking about it and that news bounced around my family like a grenade. They are not very racist, but culturally it put them over an edge, and without any support for the idea, I could not go with it.
You really need a lot of family support to do kids, and all of that. They really did support my half Jewish child, and did so better than myself. I was never much of a father in spite of wanting children out of my own vanity. But they never made known that side of themselves, and I had taken for granted that they would not mind.
I saw the same reaction when my cousin's child came out as Lesbian. I don't care; because the kid was sharp; real intelligent, highly educated. And the family took it badly, and sort of rejected her. My Aunt phrased it thusly: She is not one of our denomination. I asked: What the heck does that mean? Did she join the Presbyterians? I would own her in a heart beat. She is one of us; she is super intelligent, and between her and her girl friend they have a child who needs family, and you will let some silly shit stand in the way of a relationship with this kid? There are none of us that are dumbbells, but I would point to such a one with pride.
