Mayor de Blasio Gets Warm Welcome from FDNY - NYC's Bravest

Mayor de Blasio gets warm welcome from FDNY

Speaking in front of over 300 of the FDNY's newest firefighters, Mayor de Blasio on Monday lauded the bravest for their courage and told them the city needs heroes like them "more than ever."

"You made the heroic choice, you made that choice to serve ... people you don't even know, but whose humanity you are here to protect," he said at the FDNY Academy on Randall's Island.

He said serving in the FDNY is the "highest calling of public service."

"It is a profoundly important choice for New York City. Times like these, the city needs heroes more than ever," he said.

The most applause went to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro, a former firefighter who served as chief of department after 9-11.

Referring to Mayor de Blasio, Nigro told the firefighters, "He's here to support the New York City Fire Department, which I know he loves and respects."

NYC's Fire Fighters are indeed NY's Bravest. To have their support is a huge compliment to Mayor de Blasio. Clearly they recognize what a good man he is and how sincere he is.

Unlike the whiners from the NYPD, they do a very dangerous job without all the histrionics we are seeing from the pouting, childish members of the City's Police Dept.

disgruntled members of the NYPD.

This Mayor was elected by a huge majority of the people of NYC and he ran on issues like reforming the NYPD.

A poll a couple of weeks ago showed that his reform proposals received 60% approval from the people of NY. I doubt that is going to change because of the shameful behavior of those members of the NYPD who have only emphasized the need for those reforms.

The support of the NYCFD is important and I'm glad he has that support.

Talking Point:
Mayor tells fire fighters that they are the highest calling and heroes, an obvious dig at the NYPD

They put the NYPD to shame. They are there for New Yorkers when every other agency in the city passes the buck.

In my 22 years on the Upper West Side the police proved useless, while the FDNY proved themselves vital over and over again.

that has developed in large cities especially, seems to cause them to view the public as the enemy.

I love Fire Fighters also. They are generally friendly and helpful to people and they do risk their lives to save the lives of others.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/19/nyregion/new-york-settles-bias-lawsuit-against-fire-department.html

For Mayor Bill de Blasio, who vigorously criticized the civil rights records of both the Police and Fire Departments during his campaign last year, the decision to settle the suit represented another sharp break from the Bloomberg administration.

“The brave men and women of the F.D.N.Y. work tirelessly to keep us safe from harm’s way — and our administration is committed to ensuring every New Yorker who seeks to take on this heroic role has a fair opportunity to join the ranks,” Mr. de Blasio said in a statement.

Soon after taking office, Mr. de Blasio announced a settlement with civil rights groups that argued that the Police Department’s stop-and-frisk practices unfairly targeted minorities. He then announced that the city would no longer seek to block a new law that allowed lawsuits against individual police officers accused of racial profiling.

finally had enough of Bloomberg. It was an exciting and refreshing campaign, but I doubt the NYPD were too happy with it, and are just using these tragic deaths and the protests to try to force him to resign.

Hopefully it will back fire.

any day. No one is ever afraid when they see a firefighter headed their way.

And that is a wonderful idea, to perhaps have the police put under the FD in some way. People are now afraid to call the cops when they just need help, as more often then not the police can make a situation worse. I wonder what would happen if there was an actual place one could call for help if it would cut down on so much police violence.
