Lakeland-based Publix Super Markets will offer benefits to married same-sex couples..
The grocery chain with about 168,500 employees nationwide said it will start offering health, dental and vision benefits to any couple that is married in any state, regardless of the laws where the worker lives.
Employees can enroll starting Jan. 1.
The decision from the employee-owned company comes as Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and others fight to uphold Florida's ban on same-sex marriage, despite a federal judge's ruling striking down the 2008 state constitutional amendment.
Publix only operates in states where same-sex marriage is banned. It has 760 stores in Florida.

(231 posts)I work for a very large printing/bookbinding company that has offered health and life insurance benefits to same-sex couples for many years now, and also includes same sex couples in it's own company interpretation of the Family & Medical Leave Act.
I have no illusions that any company is doing this out of the bigness of its corporate heart--it's a bottom line business decision made by executives who want to hire and retain talent. These execs realize that if I have a choice between working for a company that will put my partner on my health plan and one that won't, I'm likely to choose the one that will.
Sometimes the smart business practice is also the right thing to do.

(14,337 posts)When my daughter lived in Florida, she tried to get an LP job with Publix. Nobody leaves, she was told. If employees don't leave, that is a sign of a good company to work for.
