(23,796 posts)Wisconsin's unemployment numbers are going down, even though the number of Wisconsin jobs are dropping.
This is because the numbers are counted two different ways. Using the Kos example, if someone living in Racine gets a job in Chicago, IL, her job is counted in Illinois' total (for the OP chart). However, since she lives in Wisconsin, her employment counts for Wisconsin.
In other words, more people are commuting from Wisconsin to other states, dropping Wisconsin's unemployment numbers. Seems like if Scott Walker was such a great economic leader, he could get Wisconsin citizens jobs in Wisconsin.

Texas Unemployment Rate Drops to 7.3 Percent
Texas employers add 67,200 jobs in January
AUSTIN Texas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent in January, down from 7.4
percent in December, and down from 8.1 percent in January 2011. The Texas unemployment rate is one full
percentage point below the national unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. Texas has remained below the national
unemployment rate for 61 months. Januarys is the lowest unemployment rate in Texas since April 2009.
Texas added 67,200 nonfarm jobs in January for a total of 258,200 jobs added over the year. Private employers
added 73,800 jobs over the month, totaling 332,600 private sector jobs added over the year. Texas has
experienced positive annual job growth in nonfarm jobs for the last 21 consecutive months.
Were seeing substantial economic growth here in Texas, said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC)
Chairman Tom Pauken. I am encouraged that Mining and Logging, which includes oil and gas employers, has
added more than 38,000 jobs over the past year. This industry has grown at a faster rate than any other in Texas,
at a 17.6 percent annual growth rate.
Nine of the 11 major industries in Texas added jobs in January, led by Professional and Business Services,
which added 18,100 jobs over the month. Over the past year, this industry has added 69,500 jobs for an annual
growth rate of 5.3 percent.
When the majority of industries in Texas add jobs over the year, thats a positive sign, said TWC
Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. Texas continues to have diverse job opportunities for a
diverse workforce, and TWC is committed to helping Texans seize those opportunities.
The Mining and Logging industry grew 2.2 percent in January, adding 5,700 jobs. Texas Manufacturing
industry also has continued to grow, adding 2,400 jobs in January for a total of 25,900 jobs added over the year.
Manufacturing jobs have grown at a rate of 3.2 percent over the year, outpacing the national growth rate for
Manufacturing of 2.0 percent.
The addition of 332,600 total private sector jobs over the year is positive news. Growth in the Goods-
Producing industries, including Manufacturing, has been steady, said TWC Commissioner Representing the
Public Andres Alcantar. TWC and our local boards are committed to helping job seekers and employers
benefit from Texas encouraging job market.
The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had the lowest January unemployment rate in the state at 4.1
percent. The Odessa MSA came in second at 4.9 percent, and the Amarillo MSA third at 5.2 percent (not
seasonally adjusted).

(9,748 posts)Like pretty much everything else, oil is cheaper to pump overseas. So they dug and capped wells all over the United States waiting for oil to hit $100/barrel for a sustained period.
Oil leases are really nasty things for the property owners. The lease is forever, and you only get money when they actually remove any of the oil. So if you sign an oil lease your heirs a thousand years from now (in theory) would not be allowed to do anything with your property that may interfere with the oil company.
Also, you sign away a whole class of material. That fracking they are doing in Pennsylvania? Those oil wells might have dried up a hundred years ago. Good chance that when they started the fracking process they shocked a lot of property owners with no idea that this material under their property had been signed away a century ago.

(2,642 posts)It's 23,900 (preliminary, seasonally adjusted) jobs over the course of the year (mostly public sector union employees, most likely).
Every other chart in that report is in WI favor, including a lower than national average unemployment rate, and a .8% reduction in unemployment rate over the past year.
I am sure it makes everyone feel better to point at one chart in a long report and say "SEE SEE!" but the facts don't really back up the claims that are being made.
If we intend to defeat Walker (which I feel is a longshot anyway) we ought to have stronger evidence than a cherry picked chart from a preliminary report.

(6,335 posts)From yesterday
A broader snapshot tells a different tale. Illinois ranked third while Wisconsin placed 42nd in the most recent Bloomberg Economic Evaluation of States index, which includes personal income, tax revenue and employment. Illinois gained 32,000 jobs in the 12 months ending in February, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found. Wisconsin, where Walker promised to create 250,000 jobs with the help of business-tax breaks, lost 16,900.

(2,642 posts)But the article you just linked to is full of statistics that his supporters can easily turn around and use to justify his actions:
"Wisconsin's 6.9 percent unemployment rate in February is tied with Massachusetts as the nation's 14th lowest. The 9.1 percent rate in Illinois is tied with Georgia and South Carolina at 42nd. The jobless figure in Quinn's state has been 9 percent or higher since March 2009."
"The index ranked Wisconsin 42nd among the states when comparing the fourth quarter of 2011 with the same period of 2010."
The 4th quarter of 2010 vs 2011? That's 1 Quarter before Walker took office, and almost a full quarter before his Budget Repair Bill passed.
There are plenty of statistics that show how much of an asshole Walker is, and how much damage he's done to Wisconsin. My point is that using cherry picked stats and ignoring half of the data isn't going to make a very good argument.
