$2 dollars should be taken from the NYPD Budget. Obviously, since the elimination of these nuisance citations hasn't led to the city going up in flames due to "increasing" crime, we don't need officers to harass people for having a broken tail-light.
If you ask me, funding a city through the revenue generated by fines for stupid non-violent stuff, IS NO WAY TO FUND A CITY.
Maybe a nice tax increase on the .01% to cover the lost revenue.
I just don't understand what the police unions are thinking. If you quit doing your job, and no one notices...maybe you weren't needed in the first place.
Maybe some of the "good cops" ought to have a little chat with the right-wingnut union leadership, because the "leadership" is making them all look like fools.

(3,595 posts)Then tell the cops to go jump in a lake. Revenue will increase substantially. Settlements for cop abuse will diminish.
The city's bottom line will improve.
If you goal is just to increase revenue, red light cameras are the way to go.

(52,317 posts)they know what they are doing. they are not reducing public safety, they are only reducing revenue. this is exactly the leverage they are looking for negotiating against the mayor.
i agree that it's the kind of "inside baseball" negotiating tactic that make for terrible p.r., but unless the mayor opts for a major confrontation, it will get them a negotiating edge.

This harassing of the black community to pay for city costs is no different than what is going on in Ferguson MO. And it is a tax on the poor. Communities years ago used to be called "speed traps" because they targeted travelers so they could use the fines to pay for city costs. That to is still going on.
It is a vicious circle: harass someone and then be surprised that they get angry so harass them for being angry enough to protest.

(52,317 posts)take advantage of people who can't vote to take away your power.
parking tickets is their method of choice for that.
harassing selected residence is a somewhat different dynamic but a lack of political power is certainly a big factor.

(25,183 posts)One of the parking meter Nazis gave me a ticket for having a clear license plate protective cover over my FRONT plate while perfectly legally parked in Hell's Kitchen. I swear, I will never go back to the city again. I don't give a shit how much entertainment they have to sell, I didn't need it when I lived in the Pacific Northwest nearly eight years ago, and I don't need it now.

(25,183 posts)I live about half an hour away from the city, so a cab ride would cost a fortune. Most public transportation is abysmal, so I'll just stay the hell away from the place, I really don't need it.

This will increase tax revenue and keep private businesses afloat.

(13,620 posts)has a worthless son that we all had to babysit. He was supposedly some kind of a warehouse supervisor or something, it was hard to tell.
Every single time he went on vacation, I'd wait until Wednesday or so and see his dad and ask, where's Hal (his kid) at? The dumbass would just say, he's on vacation, never realizing I was messing with him. Right over his head every time. Everyone else got it. It took three days or so to notice he was gone!
I can tell you it would be outstanding to see the people of NYC pull together and do their best to avoid any real trouble. Show that a drastic disarming and reduction in force is in order and start with the white shirt thugs!
