I ask because I just saw a commercial on TV that criticized American education. It gave some statistic about how few children know something or other (I wasn't really paying attention until I heard them say 'education'). Anyhow, the commercial went on to say that Exxon Mobile wanted excellent schools in the US.
And I could have sworn I remembered hearing that Exxon Mobile pays ZERO taxes. So wtf are they doing complaining about education when they don't pay taxes to support our schools?!
Doesn't it take more than a slick commercial to REALLY support education in America?
Sometimes I feel like I am living in an alternate universe.
On edit, I found this on the Google. And yes, now I'm SURE about that alternate universe.

(1,068 posts)They not only don't pay taxes, they get subsidies from the government, which goes right into dividends, executive bonuses, and lawyers fighting environmental standards. We MUST EXPOSE this hypocricy, and destroy the republicans as much as possible on this issue.
One thing that MUST HAPPEN. We MUST NATIONALIZE ALL ENERGY corporations and work the issues from a people's point of view. This is too serious an issue to leave to the 1% of 1%'ers profit margins.

(96,793 posts)After I saw this commercial and the crap on the website I just linked, I am picturing people smiling and thinking "Oh isn't that nice? Exxon Mobile is doing something GOOD!" But if they aren't paying taxes, how can they REALLY be helping our schools? And how many people even know they don't pay taxes?
I'm so sick of the lies and the manipulation. Last week on Tax Day, we had a big protest downtown. We went to several area corporations that pay zero taxes and protested in front of their buildings. One of them was the big electric company here in town. Well they immediately put out a press release claiming that yes they did pay taxes and they cited a dollar amount. But that was the amount in taxes that they collect on utility bills from their customers, not taxes they actually PAY. Meanwhile people all over town think the protesters were wrong.
This crap just infuriates me.
