Based on what I heard, I would guess he has the support of some current TSA officials and is their mouthpiece.
His basic premise is that he wants to do real security instead of pointless pat downs and snipe hunts for tiny folding knives and knitting needles.
He's also promoting a book.
I'm posting this here to ask what you would suggest we do with/for/about/instead of TSA.
For the record, I have been opposed to Security Theater 3000 since the first day it started.

To me taking off and going half the way across the country to see the sites there is a waste of money as we have many sites to see right here at home that I've not seen yet. I guess traveling all over the place while young and in the Navy wore me out on traveling

(11,076 posts)Homeland security for blatant redundancy. TSA for focusing on passenger intimidation. Look, if liquids were dangerous we would have had at least one trash barrel at a TSA station explode in the past ten years. Airline security has been left up to the passengers. As sad as that seems it is probably one deterrent to hijackings. Those guys know that gun or not the odds are stacked against them once they are trapped on the plane with angry folks who are tired of having their rights trampled.
As for TSA, I suggest an intense universal training program and complete background checks. This comes with a pay grade that would attract qualified candidates.

So, no need to strip-search babies.
The cabin doors are locked, so the hijack threat is next to eliminated. Therefore knives are not a big deal.
A eye-sight spot check and pat down of any area that seems suspiciously 'bulgy'.
If there's a credible threat then bust out the x-ray machines, otherwise leave 'em in the office.
