A major transit union has added its voice to the growing opposition to a plan to eliminate overnight PATH service on weeknights.
"Slashing the services would be detrimental to people who are trying to make ends meet," said Ray Greaves, chairman of the New Jersey Amalgamated Transit Union State Council.
"For workers who are working minimum wage jobs, this is their most affordable means of transportation. To take that away is like a tax increase on the middle class and working class."
The suggestion to eliminate overnight PATH service was included in a 99-page report that was released on Saturday. The panel that recommended the idea was appointed by
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The panel said eliminating PATH service from 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on weeknights could save at least $10 million per year.
