WASHINGTON
The Amalgamated Transit Union has named its new training center in honor of Rosa Parks and Tommy Douglas, heroes ATU members regard as two of North Americas most courageous leaders.
"The Parks/Douglas Center will open its doors to train future generations in the tradition of these courageous two leaders and heroes of the ATU," said Larry Hanley, international president of ATU, the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada. It will serve as a center to train leaders for the progressive reform movement in Canada and the United States, as both these heroes did for their countries.
ATU acquired the campus of the former National Labor College last summer and plans to dedicate it to Parks and Douglas next spring.
A woman who risked her personal safety and perhaps her life for the freedom of all Americans, Rosa Parks (Feb. 4, 1913 Oct. 24, 2005) took bold action by refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus in 1955.
