Comrade Grumpy

(13,184 posts)
Tue Jan 6, 2015, 12:45 AM Jan 2015

I think name-calling makes DU suck. Can't we grow up a bit?

None of these have been aimed at me (as far as I know), but I find the resort to calling people "gun humpers" or "Putin boot lickers" or similar things to be unworthy of a serious discussion site.

I don't even like "Repukes." It all seems sort of grade schoolish.

If all you're going to do is call somebody names, it might be worth it to think twice before you post.

Making an actual argument, of course, is a different matter.

That is all.

Tue Jan 6, 2015, 12:57 AM
Jan 2015

I can halfway deal with it if someone throws a name out while they're making an argument, but name-calling as the entire argument drives me crazy, and the possibility of it does affect my behavior sometimes. There are some topics I won't post in because of this.

The only reason for someone to use this tactic is to silence the person it's being used on, and derail the discussion. I call it "disruption" even if I agree with the person doing it.

I believe we as democrats should encourage dialogue on it. And listen with open hearts and minds.

Many whiny white people in America... imagine if American white people had a history, in America, of their ancestors being lynched (in America), being denied service in public and commercial facilities, being denied employment, housing, loans, medical care.

Can you even FATHOM how much whining would be going on?

Shit...

Here is how much white people would whine if they had to live ONE DAY of their lives in the shoes of a Black person, this post of mine will be alerted on almost certainly, so not only would MANY (not all of course, nowhere here am I saying ALL white people, although all white people do have privilege) white people whine like little babies if they had to walk in those shoes, they will whine at just my suggestion of it.

they need to look in a mirror. There's no culpability on their end, it's all the fault of "whiny white people." And there's never any condemnation for the spew quoted above, just back-slapping from members of two of the protected groups. It is not conducive to serious discussion, and a not-too-bright way to rally anyone to "the cause." But if it makes some feel good to knock down whites to make them feel better, so be it. It'll pass. I think name calling is grade school, that's why adults don't do it real life. But if that is your thing go for it.

If people here talked to people in real life like they post here they would be punched out. But keyboard warriors and all that ....

The difference is, on DU most posters see things in black and white, either or. In real life people fall in between.

I have never been punched out in real life like I have been on DU (metaphorically speaking).

Jan 2015

The days when DU had lots of interesting and intelligent discussions, and even at this time of the night the front page of GD had just one hour's worth of posts, it was so full of rich and engaging people.

Tonight it has been on a two hours of front page listings, which means DU postings are roughly half what they used to be.

One thing DU has done is crucify new posters for one mistake, one word in the wrong place, one newbie nuance - and poof, their gone. Meanwhile we are infested with long time posters who don't even post a Journal, and some who run around mouthing snide remarks that are off topic and just mean, personally pointed attacks.

DU, these days, sucks. Thanks in part to fan clubbers.

However, its use is entirely unsurprising in an anonymous internet political forum, and can be easily ignored in a discussion concerning larger and more important issues and concerns.

They're saying, without actually saying it, that they lack the maturity to argue the issue, so they'll go after the messenger:

"I don't like what you said, but I can't refute it, so I'll call you a jerk/asshole/moron/idiot/troll/RW shill/etc. instead. So there! Take that! I sure showed you, didn't I? Pthhhhhhh!!!".

Name-calling is inane. However, calling Repukes, "Republicans" shows respect (however little it may be) that they do not merit. I will continue to call them "repiggies". They do not deserve anything better. Of course, I do not mind calling them "willfully ignorant", as that happens to be an accurate description!

but I find the resort to calling people "gun humpers" or "Putin boot lickers" or similar things to be unworthy of a serious discussion site.

You're late to the discussion. Those terms did not appear out of nowhere, they came after lengthy discussions and became a shorthand.

The actual arguments you were looking for were made. The response was, in many cases, irrational babbling, subject changing, finger pointing and name calling. The names you dislike were created as a shorthand for the people making those non-arguments.

Sometimes name calling is well called for. When people act like aholes they should be called on that even if someone calls them a not nice name. Calling people names cuz they have some characteristic that they are born with or because of some physical thing is not ever cool. I don't know if the OP is upset because of both kinds or just the later. I have seen both here.
