Kochs and Walmart Clan Wage Dirty War to Stop You From Putting Solar Panels on Your Home

A new rooftop solar system is installed every three minutes in the U.S., up from one every 80 minutes just eight short years ago. If this pace continues to accelerate or even just holds steady, it will not be long before solar panels become visible, if not ubiquitous, in many neighborhoods nationwide.

That prospect is enough to upset the Koch brothers, the heirs of the Walmart fortune and the utility industry, all which are trying to stamp out the rooftop solar movement or at least make a tidy profit penalizing the people who use it. With the help of powerful lobbyists and PACs like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and Americans for Prosperity, they are set to do battle in statehouses across the nation in 2015.

ALEC, which has long been an opponent of renewable energy and the Obama administration’s effort to reduce carbon emissions, is working with conservative activists and corporate interests to fight homeowners who are installing solar panels on their roofs. Calling people who install rooftop solar panel “freeriders,” another word for freeloaders, the pro-corporate group is actively promoting legislation in states to charge fees, even exorbitant ones, for rooftop solar installations.

Behind the lobbyists are the megarich Walton family. The majority owners of the Walmart retail chain also own several energy interests, including a 30% stake in First Solar, which makes the parts for huge commerical installations of solar panels that operate like power plants. A recent report by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance shows that the Waltons are giving lobbyist organizations millions to attack renewable energy laws at the state level. Their prime targets are the homeowners and businesses that opt for solar panels to provide their own electricity.

SMH... They have already made some headway in this foolishness via a regulatory capture of the PRCs in some states. They have to move quietly for now because even their usual benighted base is for cheaper energy and personal energy independence.

thinks they're entitled to people's money & that state governments are actually going along with it. It makes no sense whatsoever to penalize people for NOT buying what you're selling, because it assumes that you're entitled to a certain amount of business. You'd think that the laissez-faire crowd would be in favor of letting the market determine the fate of gas & electric companies, just like any other business that is losing customers. That's their basic idea, right? When a product or service is no longer in demand, it should be allowed to disappear from the market and no one should be punished for not wanting it anymore. It's insane that these companies are getting away with this shit in the United States of all places. Just one more example of "conservative" hypocrisy, I guess.

They want monopolized captive markets with non-negotiable prices that guarantee their obscene profits.

I way behind on my buggy-whip taxes. After all, given the mind-set of the Koch/Walton bunch, suppliers are ENTITLED to continued, unchanging, uninterrupted business or the consumer must pay the consequences.

I find it amusing that the RWNJs want to rely on the "free market" until the free market doesn't want to continue buying or paying for their goods/services. And they seen no inconsistency in this position.

You mean "Tete-a tete".

Tee-ta-tee doesn't mean anything.

And FWIW, they aren't "in for a nasty" tete a tete' unless just one of the Waltons and one of the Kochs are going to be the only ones in the room.

Before I get accused of being a "grammar Nazi", let me just say that spelling out "tee-ta-tee" makes DU look silly.

about the new solar cell technology. Other magazines talked about wind power, and how to build your own from a car alternator. I fully expected by the time I was my current age for power to be generated differently, for cars to be powered by something other than gasoline.

I guess I can "thank" the Koch's and Walton's for slowing and stopping that progress. Our media is claiming the Chinese hurt the domestic solar industry. BS. If the likes of big money business as usual, currently represented by the avatars known as Koch and Walton, hadn't thrown in roadblocks, our domestic clean energy industry would be mature, instead of fledgling.

It is rather ironic the Chinese took advantage of a capitalistic opportunity and outmaneuvered the U.S. industry. Instead of directing our ire at the Chinese, we should be directing it to Koch's and Walton's. They are the true enemies of American industry.

Time for a 100% income tax for the super rich? Maybe we should be empathic and make it only a 99% tax, for these super-rich folks who use their money to undermine our government and airwaves and corrupt our legislators with their economic perversions.

if you are still plugged into the public grid, lets face it if everyone moved to Solar we would still want the security of knowing there was a power company available if needed. If everyone moved to solar the power company would not be able to maintain their infrastructure and would eventually be out of business, then you would be SOL if you have problems with your solar power.
