Given the amount of other topics that are discussed in GD, I have noticed that threads on human rights generally fall fairly quickly to the bottom and get very few replies (most notably the ones on North Korea). Maybe there are only a limited amount of people who are truly interested in discussing this, so I propose starting a human rights group.
Specifically I'm looking to discuss human rights issues that don't get much notice to provide information about them in the hope of finding more core activists to help spread the word about them.
My goal is to find at least 20-25 members to be able to justify having this new group.
If this is something you would be interested in, please chime in and also recommend this thread so it gets more visibility.
Thanks,
David
Ps-If anyone is interested in helping to recruit people please post this in your sig line.

(2,506 posts)Defining human rights and using this as a filter would help greatly in both domestic and foreign affairs. Too much today is about tactical, accepted by PTB, expediency, and not about what the correct solution ought to be
I've got you down on the list. If we are able to get enough interest (a big if) I would want to discuss the parameters of what would be discussed. Certainly other groups exist that would overlap with this and I don't want take away from those groups.

(22,000 posts)Please don't tell me it's 500 pages! I need like something that is a summary. I'm trying to write the results up for my dissertation and my mind can't take too much more before it explodes. Plus I'm headed on vacation next week. It might be something I can put on my phone and read while in the air.

(53,661 posts)It's copyrighted, but can be posted as news or I guess at DU, if the UN is advised:

Here are the terms of service:

I don't think it'd be a problem but I don't want to write as my OS doesn't play nicely with others. And there are occasional news stories that refer back to the articles in the Declaration. It would make a good start to discuss many news stories.
One could also post about human rights in the American sense, from the Declaration of Independence through the Amendments for a discussion of some of them. Or perhaps the statements of other nations on human rights.

(22,000 posts)It's not near as long as I was thinking it was. Based on the second link we could ask for permission to post it as an educational discussion. I am a professor and will have my doctorate in a few months, so I suppose we could frame it as an "open class".
Does that sound crazy?

(53,959 posts)Two things:
1> You didn't end your bold, so everything in the left column is bolded.
2> You will need a mission statement before Skinner approves, so even if you get your numbers, you will have to have that mission statement. I suggest looking at some of the minority groups mission statements to get an idea on a direction.

(22,000 posts)I'll start to do that. What is your feeling about issues that cross-over into other groups? For instance Israel and Palestine.

(53,959 posts)You could leave it up to the group, though. If this group is set up, I would suggest placing the group link in your signature line for awhile as advertising. Once it is established, a post in GD, Good Reads (which moves much slower so it will stay on the first page longer), and post a welcome to various minority groups.
ETA: If you need any help, let me know.
