Update: Neighbors in Newton County, Ga. case have been released on bail.

Last edited Sun Apr 29, 2012, 08:35 AM - Edit history (2)

"A Newton County man and his son who authorities said held a gun on the new owners of a neighboring home were arrested Monday night and charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal trespass."

Update:

"Hours later, much more serious charges -- aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal trespass -- were brought against Robert Canoles, a 45-year-old U.S. Army veteran, and his 18-year-old son. They were released from jail Tuesday night after posting bonds of $8,450 each."

Canoles lawyer:

"He disputed the Kalonjis' account that their neighbors threatened to shoot them, adding the AR-15's used by Robert and Branden Canoles weren't loaded. The rifles have been confiscated by law enforcement, Ninfo said.

"[The Canoles] were trying to thwart a crime, not commit one," the attorney said. "If anyone deserves an apology, it's them.""

I don't think the Canoles ought to be holding their breath while waiting for an apology

I wonder if they would have been charged without widespread internet interest. Liberal_in_LA Apr 2012 #1

A result of watching too much Fox News?

If that's the case I can't help feeling sorry for these people.

Cut their grass and do anything the family needs to have done for at least 2 months.

Forcing them to do something that would obviously infuriate these racists would be dangerous to that family. What happens when their heads explode and they harm this family?

If I were them, I wouldn't want those cretins within 10 miles of my home and/or family.

but hatred doesn't just go away. I have no doubts that this Dad and son already know Black people. I have no doubts that it doesn't make a difference.

Forcing servitude on people of this caliber who already hate for no reason other than ignorance and prejudice would not make a bad situation better. It would only make it worse.

Just my opinion, FWIW, but I do know folks like this.

fond memories. We had all kinds of neighbors around us. I had a black neighbor on one side and a hispanic neighbor on the other side. Across the street a mixed couple and a couple that was asian and married to a black guy. We all got along. If there was one complaint I would say on the weekends when the guys would be outside playing their music while washing their cars. The music was loud and all different types of music. Of course it would usually be around our nap time. So got around it by putting our fan on. That drowned out allot of the music. You learn to adapt. But people got along.

This whole "every dude with a gun is a cop" mentality that has taken hold is a bad thing. It leads to things like what happened to Trayvon Martin. It leads to this. What's wrong with simply calling 911 and letting the police do their job?

Defend your own. Protect your own interests. Don't depend on socialist government provided police. It's what John Galt would do. And people who are too frail to defend themselves and don't have guns, well, they deserve to be deprived. Weaklings.

There is a disconnect in these people that makes them think 2nd Amendment rights = right to be vigilantes.

From the article.....

Now, four days later, Canoles finds himself facing charges after the Newton County Sheriff's Office and District Attorney met Monday with the Kalonjis and their attorney, Don Samuel.

Samuel typically handles a higher-profile clientele, including NFL star Ray Lewis, former Atlanta Thrashers star Dany Heatley and rapper T.I.

The lawyer said he took the case as a favor to Bruno Kalonji, who had taught his kids soccer. Charges against the elder Kalonjis were dropped while the sheriff promised an internal investigation into the deputies' actions.

The Kalonjis said they were also given assurances that their new neighbor will face charges for what Samuel called his "vigilante justice."

Don Samuel is not someone you want to piss off. Seriously. These guys will rue the day....hell, the Sheriff's Office is gonna rue the day they screwed with the Kalonjis.
