Putin to resign as party leader
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-04-25/putin-to-step-down-as-party-leader/3970824Russia's president-elect Vladimir Putin has announced he plans to step down as the chairman of the country's ruling party.
The country's current prime minister, Mr Putin says he will resign from the position in the United Russia party after he is inaugurated as president on May 7.
"In line with political practice here, the president stands above parties," Mr Putin told the party leadership.
But many analysts suspect the move may have more to do with protecting his own long-term political popularity, which is considerably higher than United Russia's.
