Fiery 50-plus vehicle pileup closes I-94 in west Michigan

GALESBURG, Mich. -- Both directions of I-94 are in eastern Kalamazoo County due to a fiery pileup involving 50-70 vehicles.

The interstate is closed between Galesburg and Climax (mile markers 88 and 92).

Michigan State Police say one person is dead and multiple others are injured. Multiple semi trucks are involved in the accident and one caught fire; it was reportedly hauling fireworks. People who aren't injured were taken to warming centers, according to State Police Inspector Tracey McAndrew.

Law enforcement described the scene as a "very chaotic situation." Drivers are advised to avoid the area as I-94 will be closed for much of the afternoon.
