Trayvon Martin remains top story with public, poll finds

Developments in the Trayvon Martin saga were the most closely followed story in the nation last week, according to the Pew Research Center’s News Interest Index. Trayvon’s death has been the top story for five weeks in a row.

The poll last week found that 26 percent of the public cited the Sanford shooting as the story they most closely followed last week. A judge set bond for George Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in the teen’s death. Zimmerman later left jail.

The economy was No. 2 in the index with 15 percent of the public saying it was the top story.

The other top stories: the 2012 elections with 13 percent, the Secret Service scandal with 9 percent and the GSA scandal with 5 percent.
