Feel free to breastfeed here, pope tells mothers in Sistine Chapel

(Reuters) - Pope Francis baptized 33 infants in the Sistine Chapel on Sunday and told the mothers to feel free to breastfeed them if they cried or were hungry.

"You mothers give your children milk and even now, if they cry because they are hungry, breastfeed them, don't worry," he said, departing from his prepared text.

The written text of his homily had the phrase "give them milk," but he changed it to use the Italian term "allattateli", which means "breastfeed them," and added that they should not hesitate.

As the 20 girls and 13 boys in the room famous for Michelangelo's frescoes cried, Francis asked his listeners to remember poor mothers around the world, "too many, unfortunately, who cant give food to their children".

People who get upset about mothers feeding their babies need to get over it. I think it offends them because they want to think of breasts as being objects of pleasure only and not the practical organs they are. (I hope this makes sense)

I think people who get worked up about mothers feeding their offspring in the old, proven style fall into that category. They need to slapped around with giant tits until they get over their fear of them.

If you're not going to double your size in the next year you can probably wait.

pointed at a 6 yr old, when i was discussing the misbehavior.

i asked

do you think i ought to have the same expectations of a 6 yr old, as i have with you a 12 yr old?

his answer. yes.

pretty clear not a whole lot to say after a really stupid, nonthinking comment like that.

Francis is the first one who seems to have actually taken in the realities of female life when he was a parish priest, and never forgot.

John Paul II venerated women as the embodiment of the Virgin Mary. For him the mystical archetypal experience of Woman as Virgin Mother of Christ was everything.

Imagine any girl or woman trying to live up to that. In that mystical archetype there is no blood. Christ bleeds -- but his mother does not. She's "pure." The rest of us don't stand a chance.

I liked JP2; I think he was a great man in his own way, but this was a major blind spot for him.

And of course poor shriveled up scholarly Ratzinger just thought we were in the way, and responsible for all the Church's troubles. Because Eve, you know.

Pope Francis -- the more he says and does, the better I like him.

Nice young mother -- with halo, of course -- with breasts full of milk.

Go, Francis.
