AS a football fan, Chris Christie has been on quite a roll recently, attending a string of Dallas Cowboys football games in recent weeks. As New Jersey's top elected official, however, Governor Christie fumbled an important opportunity while immersed in his Cowboy fever. He was not around for the funeral of a Cliffside Park cop who was killed on the job.

Everyone should be allowed to enjoy himself, even a New Jersey governor who roots for a football team from Dallas. But there is a clear line between enjoyment and overindulgence. Last weekend, Christie crossed that line.

One part of this story involves the understandable ethics questions of Christie accepting free tickets to a Cowboys game in Dallas and a free plane ride from team owner Jerry Jones, who also owns a stake in a company with a Port Authority contract that was endorsed by Christie in 2013. But another issue has attracted far less attention - namely, that Christie made time for the Cowboys but not for a police funeral back here in New Jersey.

Put another way, he seemed more caught up in being a Cowboys fan than being a governor who should demonstrate his solidarity with cops in their grief.

I've seen whining and complaining from dim-bulb wingnuts because Obama (the President of 50 states) didn't fly 8,000 miles to attend the funerals in NYC. But to them it's just fine that Christie, who was IN the state of New Jersey at the time, bailed on a police funeral.

The ol' rightwing double standard in action!
