Texas: prison bus crash kills ten

Story here

From the article:

At least 10 people have been killed after a bus carrying prisoners lost control on an icy motorway and collided with a train in Texas, officials say.

Sheriff Mark Donaldson said the bus skidded off an overpass and slid down an embankment before hitting the train.

It is the result of a cheap way to build a highway. The accident was on a train overpass just east of Penwell, outside (West) Odessa. (Just Google Earth Penwell, TX ) and follow I-20 just a few miles back to Odessa.

You will see the 4 lane divided highway crossing the overpass for cars BUT at the top of the overpass, at a place where the driver can not see until they are upon it, NARROWS!!! Not much but a 1/2 lane SHIFT to the left comes very suddenly and probably didn't give this driver enough time to "follow the stripe".

There is another place East of Crosbyton, Texas where there is a full two lane sudden shift to the left and then a suddenly back to the right as it crosses the bridge they refused to widen.

Bear in mind that these two dangerous spots are in a huge area of "Flat Lands" and people are not expecting this type of highway design.

Also keep in mind that as of last year, night time speed limits were raised to 75 MPH all the time all over the state.

At least the crimes they were in for, with the exception of one, maybe two, were non-violent: drug possession, burglary, theft, evading arrest and illegal record labeling(?). The driver was the only one with a seatbelt and he was killed. Vans and icy overpasses don't mix well.
