Putin: Transsexuals cannot drive in Russia because Russia has too many car accidents

Russia has listed transsexual and transgender people among those who will no longer qualify for driving licences.

Fetishism, exhibitionism and voyeurism are also included as "mental disorders" now barring people from driving.

The government says it is tightening medical controls for drivers because Russia has too many road accidents.

"Pathological" gambling and compulsive stealing are also on the list. Russian psychiatrists and human rights lawyers have condemned the move.

The announcement follows international complaints about Russian harassment of gay-rights activists.

Russia has a huge problem with alcohol addiction - driving under the influence and often icy, dangerous roads I imagine is the cause for most of those accidents. The government should concentrate on the obvious instead dreaming up bigoted, ignorant laws that make no sense whatsoever. I'm glad people there are condemning this, I imagine they're horrified at it.

We had a young man from Czech Republic stay with us for a while. He told us how much they drink back home and then just hop in their cars and drive. He said the number of accidents is very, very high. I was pretty horrified listening to him laugh about it, but it was no big deal for him. Knowing how many sober people die on our winter roads here in Canada and how Russian roads must be similar or worse, I can't even imagine how many accidents they must have. It's difficult to believe someone actually thought this new law up, it just makes no sense whatsoever. I just don't understand it.

on a Baltic cruise. The traffic was HORRENDOUS and we heard from one of the
tour directors that it was related to Russian residents preferring to drive their
status symbol cars than take their excellent subway system. One tour director
said she'd been on a bus the night before that took an hour and 15 minutes to go
3 blocks. Yes, 3 blocks!

Russians are crazy.

Welcome to DU!

I heard from someone who lived in NY (I'm a native--but haven't lived there in years)
that what she used to do when feeling threatened, was to fake being crazy.
She would raise her arms and yell and carry on, and sure enough, the people she was
worried about would cross the street to avoid her.

that I had to look it up, not trusting anything the BBC says as they are in demonization mode trying to gin up hate and support for war. What I found was that Russia, being obsessed with international law and standards as they are, adopted the World Health Organization's standards on mental disorders and may apply them on who is safe to license for driving. No way this will stand. It is the WHO who classifies being trans as a mental disorder.

Yelena Masyuk, a member of the Kremlin's human rights council, said in a statement Thursday that limiting an individual's right to drive based on gender identity or sexual preference represents a "possible injustice."

The ICD is used by most UN member states. Given Putin's track record with LGBT rights, I doubt this is going away.

Think you're clever? Not so much.

Yes, I support the people of east Ukraine and Crimea who said no to their government being overthrown in a coup and to fascism. I support the help that Russia has given them, though think it is far too little.

I have NEVER said I support ANY discrimination against any LGBT people but you obviously thought you could get away with your lie because of my support for the people of east Ukraine. That not makes you a liar but downright evil to try to malign me or anyone else with untrue accusations all because of your political agenda and hate for Russians.

I support marriage equality and the property rights of LGBT people. I hope that the whole world gets there, one day, including Russia and Ukraine. That said, my biggest concern is war and masses of innocent people, straight, gay, old, young, Christian and atheist, being murdered and "cleansed" from their homeland with families and communities destroyed forever. I'm concerned about the war that the west is trying to provoke with Russia. None of that has jack shit to do with what I think about marriage equality or any other social issues.

I've never put anyone on ignore here and don't even know how to do it but I'm going to check it out because I hate liars and see no reason to further interact with you.

F64 Gender identity disorders

F64.0 Transsexualism

A desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex, usually accompanied by a sense of discomfort with, or inappropriateness of, one's anatomic sex, and a wish to have surgery and hormonal treatment to make one's body as congruent as possible with one's preferred sex.

F64.1 Dual-role transvestism

The wearing of clothes of the opposite sex for part of the individual's existence in order to enjoy the temporary experience of membership of the opposite sex, but without any desire for a more permanent sex change or associated surgical reassignment, and without sexual excitement accompanying the cross-dressing.

Gender identity disorder of adolescence or adulthood, nontranssexual type

Excl.:
fetishistic transvestism (F65.1)

F64.2 Gender identity disorder of childhood

A disorder, usually first manifest during early childhood (and always well before puberty), characterized by a persistent and intense distress about assigned sex, together with a desire to be (or insistence that one is) of the other sex. There is a persistent preoccupation with the dress and activities of the opposite sex and repudiation of the individual's own sex. The diagnosis requires a profound disturbance of the normal gender identity; mere tomboyishness in girls or girlish behaviour in boys is not sufficient. Gender identity disorders in individuals who have reached or are entering puberty should not be classified here but in F66.-.
