Why is the US friends with Saudi-Arabia, but not with Cuba?

Freedom of the Press Ranking 2014
https://freedomhouse.org/report/freedom-press/freedom-press-2014#.VLkbwS4ZzaM
http://cf.datawrapper.de/s4MnR/6/

(100 points means no freedom at all)

Category: Legal Freedom
Saudi-Arabia 29 points, Cuba 28 points, US&Europe 6 points each

Category: Political Freedom
Saudi-Arabia 29 points, Cuba 34 points, US 10 points, Europe 3-10 points

Category: Economic Freedom
Saudi-Arabia 25 points, Cuba 28 points, US 5 points, Europe 4-12 points

Overall ranks:
Cuba 190
Saudi-Arabia 181
Europe 1-52 (depends on country)
US 30

As you can see, Cuba is so much more evil than Saudi-Arabia. The US should under all circumstances keep its ties to Saudi-Arabia and shun Cuba.

1. Because of a certain voting block

residing in South Florida. Also, Cuba has no oil for us to kiss their asses over or strategically important areas that we'd want to base out of.

But mostly it's the voting block.

2. But, that voting bloc almost swung in Obama's column in the last election.

Cuban-Americans voted for Obama in 2012 by a margin of 48%, the largest to ever break for a Democrat candidate. The old time Cuban expatriados and their rabid conservatism are dying off. The younger Cubans are more liberal and don't have any allegiance or ties to any regime in pre-Castro Cuba, although the older crowd do still have the most shrill voices and places in government. For now.

just like the rest of the electorate. It's one of the main reasons the Republicans now spend most of their efforts on obstructing voting rather than encouraging it.

bingo! Take the Saudis oil and give it to Cuba and just see how fast we warm up to our southern friends in Cuba. And see how fast we drop Saudi.

/I would love to see both happen

11. Fun Fact: US foreign policy was shaped by the Cold War!

That's the answer to your question.

As for why we support countries that don't support our values, US foreign policy has always favored stability over being a perfect match. That's why we consider Saudi Arabia a partner.

8. Oil? Which may be part of the reason that SA wants the world to stay addicted to oil.

The less the West and the world depends on its oil the more critical they are likely to be about the repression there.

16. How much American owned property did Saudi Arabia confiscate without payment?
Fri Jan 16, 2015, 01:00 PM
Jan 2015

I am fairly certain the answer is NONE.

Conversely, Cuba confiscated a lot of property and wealth owned by Americans. They have never offered to make restitution. Friendship with Cuba was never going to happen until the owners were in their graves.

Their heirs won't feel the same loss. Which is why we are starting to see a thaw in the animosity.
