So, what can be done to at least help the problem? Hope we don't need more laws that say
companies must have a 'minimum' number of minorities? I think this would make matters even worse.
Why can't we just all get along?
Lord help any 'green' aliens that might land on earth.

(16,286 posts)Enslave people, steal their land and property, then for a short while make it possible a few of them might get an advantage
and guess what happens

(31,828 posts)9. It's actually a terrible, destructive policy.
Since slavery ended 150 years ago, it makes no sense for this current generation to get special treatment if they do not have what it takes. I understand that there is prejudice when trying to get a job. But if everyone were pink, there would still be ageism, sexism, and all the other ISMs that favor one over the other.
Some BP have always had a better attitude than others, even during Jim Crow. Not surprisingly, they were able to succeed when it seemed "impossible." Others are on constant
If you are Black and are at a company where they were forced to hire you, is that a good vibe to surround yourself with? Even for the money, it seems rather whorish. I would rather see more BP start businesses than waiting for Whitie to give them the time of day...

(16,286 posts)I see IT is now gone.
But that is a problem, I think we need these vicious, disgusting, MOTHERFUCKERS garbage to be seen here once in a while so we can know just exactly what we are dealing with
god dammit, there goes my fucking blood pressure again
Hey teapartier , you guys are going to push too far someday, so knock it off now, asshole, before it is TOO LATE

(16,286 posts)This aint 1958 anymore, the number of white people who wont tolerate your shit is larger and growing, add to that the number of non white people in America, and you rightwing racist fucks are outnumbered.
But that would be problematic for this place, I think
Oh, and many of those who fit in this category are NOT righwing, many of them are Democrats.

(31,849 posts)acknowledge the existence of discrimination in employment AND assumes that the "BP" hired by the company, "doesn't have it" (i.e., is incompetent/(un)under qualified). What is the basis of that statement ... besides, of course, the American default of white (male) job holder = qualified; everyone else = lesser qualified ... which, BTW, is the very misnomer that affirmative action was established to address.
JustAnotherGen
(31,828 posts)What a difference a few days makes! I went from being Marie Antoinette to the Poor Downtrodden Taker in the space of a few days. All right here at DU. You can't make this shit up!

(31,849 posts)Affirmative Action does not provide an advantage ... unless one considers the (previously denied) ability to compete, an advantage.
randys1
(16,286 posts)Given everything we know, affirmative action merely attempts to level the playing field
See how well ingrained racism and white superiority is in all of us white folks!

(31,849 posts)Which is why this race thing is so difficult to deal with.

(31,828 posts)Where I feel like I need to run back to the group I host (African American) because of a set of DU'ers that make me want to throw up in my mouth?
Check yourself.
If you read the AA Group - you know we've been under attack at DU. Now my first gut instinct when I read a subject line like this is to try to figure out which minority member is being targeted by a passive aggressive spinoff thread.
I stand corrected.
Oh - and you won't like the answer I give to your question - because now more than ever we need affirmative action.

(31,828 posts)Top down - America is still very much white male - in the places where it counts - i.e. where you can make money.
And - it's pretty obvious that people like the Koch brothers are 'tapping into' a last gasp for a population that is dwindling fast.
I'm not alone - amongst many black DU'ers in feeling that since late 2007 there has been a sharp increase in the palpable in your face abject hatred from a lot of white folks towards black Americans.
The ones engaging in this behavior blame us, Mexicans, Muslism, Jews, Gays and women who don't stay at home baking cookies for every fucked up mistake they made in their lives.
God forbid one of them is a hiring manager.
God effing forbid.
As a black woman in corporate America with direct reports (I'm in an HQ environment) - since I'm held to a higher standard of conduct - then . . .
I want the white guy down the hall to feel that pain too. Watching what he does in terms of hiring, pay, and promotion -
That's fair.
Ohh - and psssssssst - same company. Had a Director hire me from another group at 20K less than a man withouth the correct skill set for marketing and without the education.
So don't tell me it's peachy keen. You give me a Paycheck Fairness act and you wait and see how that comes back to bite them in the ass.
I'm just going to go for the difference in my Social Security to be placed in a ROTH IRA.

(1,850 posts)I value your opinion because of your experience.
If everything that has happened in the last 40 or 50 years hasn't brought about the desired result, then what will?
JustAnotherGen
(31,828 posts)My most recent new hire is a white male in his late 50's with an investigative background.
Because of my experience - I probably have a great deal more respect for not only the groups I mentioned - but the older worker who can't afford to retire. To include older white men - who if I give them just a little excel training - or a little powerpoint training - or a little MS Project training . . . can do a stellar job in the tech field in a finance position where they have to give presentations.

(31,849 posts)that said companies must have a minimum number of minorities ... with the except of set-asides for minority businesses. That phrasing is the lie that the right put up to foment resistance against EEO laws.
gollygee
(22,336 posts)if you think there are laws forcing companies to have a minimum number of minorities.
I assume, as those above, that this is an anti-affirmative-action screed.
The reason we need affirmative action is because we can't all just get along, or we never have been able to so far, and people of color are the ones without societal power and therefore the ones hurt by that. Affirmative action tries to balance what we have otherwise, which is negative action, otherwise known as "last hired, first fired."
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)to ensure that PoC are in hiring pools ... you can't get hired unless they know you are out there, and then, make an effort to talk to you.
BTW, the largest beneficiary group of Affirmative Action is white women.
gollygee
(22,336 posts)though he didn't seem so worried about white women getting jobs.
Not aware of first. Thanks!

(31,849 posts)I wonder why?
Regarding the "pool point" ... having worked in HR for a really long time, this is the single biggest fight that I have had with hiring authorities ... mono-chromatic/mono-gendered hiring pools. They interview 25 people for a job, none of which are PoC (or women), and they blank as to why their department is comprised of white males.
Then, they defend with ... "While we just can't seem to get PoC (women) to apply!" And the extent of their advertising for the post is putting the job up on the company website and accepting referrals from current employees.
I, once, bet an Engineering hiring manager (a staunch opponent of Affirmative Action because it made him hire lesser qualified, though PoC and female candidates) that if he allowed me to work with him, he would (at no additional cost) more than triple his 1st cut/screening pool of applicants (significantly improving the caliber of candidates for his consideration) AND, after the 1st screening, the remaining pool would have PoC and women (something that had never happened).
While the hiring manager ended up a white male for the position, 3 of the 5 candidates interviewed were, either, PoC or women. AND, the runner-up candidate was a Hispanic woman that the hiring manager was so impressed with, he made her an offer for another, higher status position.
During our bet settlement dinner, we discussed the recruitment and I told that this was exactly how Affirmative Action was supposed to work ... expand the pool to include PoC and women, by AFFIRMATIVELY marketing to them, then hire the best qualified.
By the time I left that company, he was a great advocate for Affirmative Action ... to the point that he had established relationships with 3 HBCUs, known to produce quality Engineering grads.
