President Obama vowed Friday to stop any attempt by Congress to ratchet up sanctions against Iran while the United States and partner countries negotiate over its nuclear program and warned that lawmakers would be responsible if the talks fail.
Republicans have said a bill on new sanctions on Iran will be debated in coming weeks, but the Obama administration has urged Congress to avoid such a move while the years-long talks over Irans nuclear program near another deadline. Obama argued that, at such a delicate moment, additional sanctions would only hurt the chances of a deal to end Irans nuclear program, and said he would not sign the bill.
It will jeopardize the possibility of providing a diplomatic solution to one of the most difficult and long-lasting national security problems we have faced in a very long time, Obama said. Congress needs to show patience.
I will veto a bill that comes to my desk.
He said that if the discussions with Iran fail, it could potentially lead to war, though he insisted he was not suggesting the United States would go into an immediate war footing. But if the talks fail, Obama said, the risk that the situation comes to a military confrontation is heightened. Lawmakers would have to own that, he said.
