On any meaningful scale, Chris Kyle was a worse human being than the Kouachi brothers.

The fact that Chris Kyle gets cherished as an American hero (and even has fans amongst liberals as far as I understand) tells me all I need to know about whether Islamic countries are any worse than Western nations.

So, many Muslims think apostasy should be illegal. On the other hand, many Americans think Chris Kyle was a great guy, torture is ok, bombed weddings are an acceptable byproduct of the drone program and the Iraq war was "the lord's work".

Replace "in service of Allah" by "in service of the country" and you can get Americans to commit atrocities as bad as any Islamist.

In the end, it all depends on whose ox is being gored.

I want to make my own decision on whether he is bad or not....right now I am leaning towards he did his job and probably saved lives. I could change.......I am a little shocked that American Sniper made 30 million on Friday night alone....that is amazing.

Whether you consider him bad or not all boils down to whether you sympathize with the Iraqi people or not.

Your argument that "he did his job" is exactly the point I was trying to make: In the US you earn absolution for any crime as long is it is done "in service of the country". The concept differs from "in service of Allah" in name only. Both invoke a "divine" entity in order to strip people of personal responsibilities.

My son's childhood friend is in the Marines and is working toward being a sniper, it was a dream of his since grade school. He's a nice young man, serving his country. Not a psycho or a bad human being by any stretch.
