HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - The Republican speaker of Alabamas House of Representatives accused a federal agency Saturday of trying to organize labor unions, though it was unclear why he made that accusation and his spokeswoman could not offer supporting evidence.
Rep. Mike Hubbard said Alabama will maintain right-to-work laws, meaning no worker can be forced to join a union or be required to pay for union representation costs. Labor unions must still represent workers who do not join or pay dues.
We will make certain that we are always a right-to-work state despite what President Obama is trying to do, Hubbard told a meeting of the Republican Mens Club, according to Al.com (

Hubbard appeared to be referencing the National Labor Relations Board. By law, the NLRB does not organize labor unions. Rather, it supervises elections in which workers can decide whether they want union representation. The board also investigates alleged violations of federal labor law. NLRB officials did not immediately return messages seeking comment Saturday.
