The first woman to lead an Honor Guard in India

US President Barack Obama is finally in India, but it is Wing Commander Pooja Thakur of the Indian Air Force who has emerged as Sunday's shining star as she marched two steps behind the US President during the Guard of Honour inspection at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

This is the first time that a female officer of the Air Force has led the Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Thakur's moment of pride came as 'nari shakti' (woman power) is the theme for the Republic Day Parade this year where Obama is the chief guest.

This January 26 will also be the first time when women contingents of the army, air force and navy will march down Rajpath in the national capital.

The US doesn't exactly have an equivalent, so it's not clear if we've "already done" this. The Marine Detachment at 8th & I in DC has had a few female adjutants, but I don't know that we've ever had a female adjutant for any joint parades like this.

If Fox mentions her at all, it will be something awful, like when mentioning that first female UAE fighter pilot, Eric Bolling snorted it was "boobs on the ground."

i have viewed him negatively but it seems like he is doing some good and is really serious about it such as just cleaning up the country and not viewing it as something shameful .

giving attention to women this way is a good thing . especially in a country where so many women are treated as less than equal.

But, yeah, he's made nari shakti the focus of this year's Republic Day.
