STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Believe it or not, Westerleigh resident Anthony Varriano purchased this 1940 Ford Deluxe convertible for $65 in 1956, representing two week's pay for him at the time.

"I bought it from Joseph Giuliano, a gas-station mechanic," Varriano recalled. "I worked in a body shop and he was a customer. It was a racing car and he was going to junk it, keeping only the engine. The engine was worth $1,500 -- a full-house Ford block but hot-rodded."

The young Varriano asked how much Giuliano wanted for the car, sans engine.

"He said $50, and I told him I'd give him $65 -- I was only making $36 a week at the time," Varriano commented.
