http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/rand-paul-disabilities-take-twoBut theres a far more substantive concern here. At his campaign stop, Paul referenced anxiety as effectively meaningless practically everyone, he said, gets a little anxious for work every day. His office, however, pointed to mood disorders, which as Glenn Kesslers report explained, refers to the part of the population that suffers from conditions like bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and dysthymia (persistent depressive disorder).
The senator seemed to think this was some kind of punchline, as if those with bipolar disorder just get a little anxious before leaving for work.
Or more to the point, Paul seems to believe that those dealing with severe mental health issues are necessarily undeserving of disability benefits or as he put it at the time, gaming the system.
Um, doesn't he have prosthetic hair?

(35,077 posts)Rand Paul does not know what he is talking about, and that is really sad.
For example; I don't know about anyone else here, but the lion's share of people of I know who have anxiety don't have their attacks when they get up, but in the afternoon or evening.

(3,732 posts)Mood Disorders sounds like "personality" to me. I'm pretty sure you can only get SSI/SSDI with a "clinical disorder" diagnosis" and not a "personality disorder" diagnosis. I'm not sure how the differences between those two are determined, but Rand Paul was certainly trying to evoke "personality" there.
Also posted a link in the other thread to an interesting article that made the "Greatest" from another part of DU.

Seems really ambiguous and "moody" to me...
Regarding my own application for SSI: I finally got on the court schedule, but no judge assigned yet. It will be THREE YEARS in May. This was long enough for me to struggle with my disabilities in poverty for many years without insurance, and then three years as an indigent person while I proved I "could not work" with no one else to support me. And then there is the irony of, after that long struggle, the ACA kicking in, and changing my health situation substantially so I don't even know what I'm going to say at that court date now.
THREE YEARS OF PROVING YOURSELF is hardly the ability to knock on the door and ask the government for free money because I feel bad.
Oh, and the icing on the cake now is if you take Food Stamps in the mean time, Fraud Investigators can come and surveille you - which includes questioning your neighbors and directly observing you besides just studying your financial records. No matter how clean you are this is extremely paranoia inducing, and no one tells you how long the investigation is going to last or whether its infinite surveillance. This only happens to people because they needed to survive on NO INCOME FOR YEARS while waiting for their SSI/SSDI application to process.
