Stop Being Indian-American!?!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/parthiv-n-parekh/stop-being-indianamerican_b_6519042.html

The fact that Jindal tries his level best to amputate his Indian identity in service of his naked political ambition is old news to those who have followed him. And yet, the above comments are outrageous, even by his standards.

It is one thing to say immigrants must do more to assimilate. I am right there with Jindal up to this extent of the thought. Many Indians come to America only to cocoon themselves in their native environment. Geographically, they may have moved here, but practically and psychologically they exist in a self-created, mini-India. That's a loss for both the immigrants and the host country.

But then, for Jindal to suggest that one must also go on to disown their native roots, heritage and culture is a slap on the face for both Indian and American sensibilities.

What exactly is Jindal asking us to do or not do when he advocates dropping the "Indian" part of our hyphenated lives? Is there, according to him, a certain code by which one is considered a "true," unhyphenated American? What disqualifies me from being that fabled American? What behaviors and practices are approved to be certified as a true American? Does affiliation with a Hindu temple or with a Mosque disqualify me? Can I attend one of those loud Indian weddings before I will be shouted down as a traitor?

in his party.

btw, there are many irish, italian, greek etc americans who will never give up that identity including right wingers.

when jindal speaks out against irish american , italian american etc events being held then he may be honest with what he is saying.

but he will never speak out against those events.

he just wants to be loved by racist whites and not be hated for being brown.

But this attitude, of "whiteness" being absolutely central to their existence/ego/what have you, is actually rather more prevalent amongst WASPs, even some who may be politically moderate, but most right-wingers above all, and perhaps especially if they're from the areas that used to be plantation country in the South(Not trying to South-bash here as I'm from Texas myself but the history'll back me up on this; it goes right back to the antebellum era).

the issue is not them.

it's about jindal and how he mostly has a problem with non whites .

jindal should call for an end to things like italian or irish events if he truly feels we shouldn't have hyphens and other shit he says.

but it's more about jindal feeling inferior because he is not white and wanting to be accepted by racists in his party.

Indeed, it's a shame that Jindal has chosen to prostrate himself before the RW, despite the fact that he knows that the racists amongst them will never fully accept him no matter what he does.

is WASP still accepted? I was told it is now a 'no-no'. And to anyone else who might question my question I consider myself White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. My grandparents and great grandparents settled in the mid-west before the family moved to the southwest.

I have suspected, for some time, that some conservatives may not like the word, because they perceive it to be some sort of slur.....although I'm sure some folks on the left feel that it's too old-fashioned to be of any legitimate use these days.

But my ancient (5-yo) phone doesn't let me properly follow my Tweeps. I've used the term & didn't get slammed for it (that I know of).

Oh, and I am a WASP; 13th generation in the US. Tho I'm more of a WAS since I'm an atheist.

Be raised with influence of that culture. This goes for anyone.

The thing is that it doesn't make anyone less american.

But Jindal isn't just about being American. It's more about him wanting to be white.

Jindal does, as far-fetched as the idea is. Actually, I'm surprised he made it to LA's gov mansion.

He must think that shedding his heritage mudt go along w/ shedding his religion. Now that he's a Christian theocrat, his Hindu past is a very black mark against him -- that crowd has no use f/ non-evangelicals.

But then, for Jindal to suggest that one must also go on to disown their native roots, heritage and culture is a slap on the face for both Indian and American sensibilities.

Very, very true.
