By Heather
1/31/15 5:00am
I don't know who MSNBC thought they were appealing to this Friday evening but they seemed to be determined to stick a fork in the eye of their regular viewers who were expecting to see Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow on the air and found themselves watching an atrocity called Morning Joe at Night rather than their usual fare of liberal television for the evening.
The two hour show was every bit as banal and awful as any of their typical three-hour three-ring circuses they air every Monday through Friday during the week and I fear watching too much of this stuff would have most people -- as Charlie Pierce loves to say when commenting on Tiger Beat On The Potomac (a.k.a. Politico) -- ready to break out the Prestone, and make it a double, especially if you didn't know it was coming. I was somewhat prepared because I heard Mrs. Greenspan talking about how wonderful it was going to be that they were allowed to pollute MSNBC's airways at night instead of just the usual three hours they're given in the mornings.
Joe has a meltdown
About the only mildly interesting part of their entire two hour exercise was watching Joe Scarborough have another one of his meltdowns when Chris Matthews dared to challenge him on foreign policy and what the next Republican presidential candidate might have to run on if they hope to win the next election.
snip//
Don't do this again, MSNBC
Unless their intention is to run Chris Hayes' and Rachel Maddow's ratings down to nothing, it might not be wise for the network to repeat this little experiment again any time soon. They replaced what is generally two hours of intelligent broadcasting that informs the viewers with two hours of banal claptrap that insults their intelligence instead, and with Joe Scarborough playing the bully-boy in prime time rather than the mornings, when most of their audience is half asleep.

I have also noticed a troubling trend for online viewers with many channels, including CSPAN... you have to log in by identifying a TeeVee provider to view live content anymore. I tried to watch SoU speech last month on CSPAN and was informed that in order to watch in real time, I would have to log in by that method.
I think that MSNBC is suffering from the corporate gravitational pull into a dark abyss of mindless distraction. I hope that Rachel is using her "off air" time to seek a new outlet for her journalism... because her current employer is becoming a propaganda outlet rather than a news source - not that they have been a news source for some time at this point.

I live in a red area in FL. Most of the people I interact with on a daily basis watch faux and repeat what they hear from that toxic waste dump. And think they are smart.
I often tell them, MSNBC is not the liberal media. They don't believe me cause faux says MSNBC is the liberal media. I shake my head and laugh. Sure believe that if they want. One day there will be a real progressive, left leaning media outlet. By the time the brain dead figure out MSNBC is faux lite it will be to late. Liberal media will rule the world. And won't they be sorry.
There is some liberal programing on MSNBC, but it is not a liberal media outlet, by a long shot.

Their presentation reminds me so much of what CNN was like in their beginning years, and why it was such a great news channel back then. I don't know how the change happened to what we've got now, but it's really not 'news' so much as infotainment.

(5,810 posts)Having seen Joe Scar really have a meltdown over the years of tuning in (more out of curiosity and to catch some of his guests and what they are attempting to say), this was a weak imitation of the real McCoy. Joe's face was not nearly red enough with blood vessels bulging and spit coming out in great, frothy gobs.
Joe is used to bullying his guests and doesn't mind insulting anyone he disagrees with. And Chris Matthews is certainly capable of holding his own against the likes of Joe Scar. There are few people on television more annoying than Chris who regularly talks over his guests, interrupts them or drags out his question running his mouth to the point that there is NO time left for the person to give a complete answer. I've seen Chris go on tirades that could teach Joe a thing or two about on air bullying. He is no shrinking violet.
Joe is just a very egotistical bully, used to dominating the conversation and Mika plays right along like the abused co- host that she us. But to characterize the interaction Friday night between Joe and Chris as a "meltdown" is laughable.
By the way, it is my great misfortune to live in the same part of Florida that Joe regularly refers to as his "hometown". He was my Representative in Congress before he decided to "spend more time with his family". UGH!
