A Guide To The Many Investigations Into Sheriff Joe Arpaio
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/04/sheriff_joe_arpaio_investigations_guide.php?ref=fpb
If Sheriff Joe is eventually found 'guilty' of abuse of power and/or violating the civil rights of Latinos and others - considering his age it would mean that he would NOT spend very many years in prison. Whereas if a 'younger' person were to be found guilty would service out more years of a long sentence.
So, the question is: Should there be an age limit (to retire) imposed upon sheriffs (and other folks) in positions where they could abuse their power - because they might not be able to be fully punished if found guilty of a crime due to their age?

(17,087 posts)If one must be capable of serving out a possible complete term of life imprisonment to hold elective office, the only eligible candidates for office would be our newly pre-conceived citizens of the Great State of Arizona.

(62,444 posts)You could say that about any elected official.
Arpaio is a major asshole, but they keep electing him.

(22,143 posts)And you know the rest. No. Sheriff is a political position now. I might object to a rickety eighty year old dude patrolling the mean streets like Seth Bullock but I don't see why a person of age couldn't be effective in the position as it is. In many cases age brings wisdom. You can't use an imbecile like "Sheriff Joe" as a reason to impose age limits on an occupation.
