Interesting stuff from Huckabee's high school days

Having done my own share of stupid shit in my youth, I'm generally not a fan of judging adults based on what they did in school. There are exceptions, though: The business about how Romney paraded his entitlement issues comes immediately to mind.

Huckabee strikes me as a kid who's sincere and thoughtful, if somewhat misguided, and definitely too hard line for my taste. Still, I always appreciate hearing these types talk about imitating Jesus, rather than hating others. Gotta call out this gem, though:

On dancing: “I strongly recommend that Christian teens stay away from dancing, mainly because some people would just not be able to respect a person who attended dances.'

In 1973, Mike Huckabee, a graduating senior of Hope High School on his way to Ouachita Baptist college, began writing a column called the “RAPture Express” for the Baptist Trumpet. The Trumpet was the weekly newspaper of the Baptist Missionary Association of Arkansas.

"RAPture Express"

(Even though I've always considered Rapture theory heretical, even way back when I was religious.)

No exceptions.

The Christian Right uses such concerns to run out the click on addressing actual social ills, peotecting their paymasters.

I'm surprised he didn't opine on going to movies, even G rated ones.

3. Considering that Huckabee became an ordained Southern Baptist minister

That is not surprising or interesting. The fact that he was ordained is enough that he should not be in politics. I guess you don't know much about the SBC but dancing and drinking have been forbidden for years. The big Baptist university near us Baylor just allowed dancing in 1996. I wonder what the infamous witch hunter, Ken Starr thinks about this now that he's president of Baylor?

After 151 Years, Dance Ban Ends at Baylor
AP
Published: April 19, 1996

WACO, Texas, April 18— For the first time in the 151-year history of Baylor University, dancing has been allowed on campus at the Southern Baptist school.

Baylor's president, Robert Sloan Jr., decided in February to lift the ban on dancing, which is still considered morally harmful by some strict Baptists.

Could lead to dancing!

An old, old joke, only marginally funny to those of us raised in that environment.

There is a long tradition of associating dance with Satan in this country, so it's not all that surprising that he'd come out on that side of it, even in those pre-Footloose days. I'm actually more interested in how (a) this column exists in the first place and (b) the development of this guy's thought over the years--or lack thereof, as the case may be.
