WASHINGTON — The collapse of Iowa-based health insurance provider CoOportunity has the nation’s political leaders pointing fingers about what went so terribly wrong.

Republicans have said the co-op’s demise is the latest evidence that the health care law doesn’t work.

“I am extremely concerned about this situation for Nebraskans needing health coverage and for the taxpayers who have seen millions of dollars lost and millions more put at risk,” Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., said on the House floor. “This is one more example of Obamacare’s failure.”

And Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, laid some of the blame on the Obama administration for failing to respond aggressively to warnings that the nonprofit CoOportunity was running into problems.

Grassley pressed Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell about how much responsibility the administration bears.

Burwell did not directly address where the fault lies. But she pointed out various actions Congress has taken in recent years that cut down on the funding available to the administration to respond in such cases

“Our focus is deeply on the consumers so we look forward to working with the State of Iowa that has the main authority over this to figure out ways that we can help those consumers,” she said.

During a conference call with reporters later in the day, Grassley acknowledged the legislative restrictions Burwell cited. Still, he said, the administration should have been on top of the problem sooner.

“They never did anything,” he said.
