Should Vermont have an official Latin motto?
One Vermont state senator thinks so and hopes to get a new law passed this year.
Vermont has a lot of official symbols. The state tree is the sugar maple, the state mammal is the morgan horse, the state beverage is milk and the state's official pie is apple.
Now, Senator Joe Benning, R-Caledonia County, wants to add the official motto, "May the 14th Star Shine Bright" a reference to Vermont's place as the 14th state.
"Vermont used to make its own coins and on that coin called a harmon cent was that latin language which we are now seeking to have brought forward into the 21st century and have a latin motto," said Benning.
Benning says the bill was suggested to him by a middle school student from Lyndonville.

Michael Webster Ive got no problem with that. I'm more concerned that you stop teaching the Hindu-Arabic number system in schools. I for one am sick of all the pandering to foreigners in this country. We should be using American numbers.

Sheila Mercon I don't care either way on the motto front- but I seriously hope the state sees these comments and realizes what a problem our school system is having. I cannot comprehend how so many people here believe that Latin is related to immigrants... The ignorance in these comments is beyond my ability to grasp.

Glen Jardine The amount of people confusing LATIN with Spanish is blowing my mind. READ THE STORY! It seems the whole idea is actually about pride in the history of VT.
Does "E Pluribus Unum" ring a bell? Another Latin motto that is as American as apple pie.

Is our children learning? Some of them sure isn't, and I'll bet Dorothy and her friends think etymology is the study of insects.
And to think that knowing Latin used to be respected as a sign of being well educated.
