Infants Diagnosed With Measles at Suburban KinderCare

Well, the measles outbreak has now spread to Chicagoland. Not sure how it got here yet. These babies are all under the age of one, too young for the vaccines:

Infants Diagnosed With Measles at Suburban KinderCare

Public health officials are investigating a “cluster of measles” at a KinderCare Learning Center in northwest suburban Chicago.

According to the Cook County Department of Public Heath, five infants at the Palatine day care may have measles. Diagnoses for two children were confirmed and test results for three remaining cases are pending, though those cases were diagnosed based on clinical and epidemiological criteria, officials said.

Health officials said the five children are all under the age of one.

All students, staff and faculty were notified of the diagnoses and anyone who has not received a measles vaccination has been told to stay at home and away from unvaccinated people for the next 21 days.

If we had sensible maternity and paternity leave, unvaccinated children wouldn't have to be exposed to the public so much, and so early. It's a recipe for a pandemic.

And if parents can afford the tuition they can probably afford to have a single income home, they would just need to downsize.

It's nearly as expensive as living in the better neighborhoods in the city and can be more expensive than most city neighborhoods. Palatine is a fairly expensive suburb.

seeing as how they referenced maternity/paternity leave..

Theory being that parents don't have to go back to work within a few weeks (or less) of birth.

...from my hair salon, where I was just this morning. I could hear several of the customers discussing this. My stylist, who is the owner, knows I am a pediatric nurse practitioner. She wanted to know if this could affect them. I told her it certainly could if someone who is in the pre-symptomatic contagious stage happens to go for takeout at the pizza place or sushi shop in the strip mall where the salon is located, and coughs or sneezes while they are in there.

My stylist does not have kids. She had no idea that you can get measles pneumonia or measles encephalitis.
