I live in Buffalo, so I already had my fill after the November snowpocalypse event. However, we have now has almost a month straight of well below freezing temperatures and an additional four feet of snow. The piles at the end of my driveway are now so high that my snowblower can't throw that horrible gray road snow slop on top on the mounds. It just kind of pfffts out of the blower, hits the side of the pile and sadly tumbles back down into the driveway.
I have snowblowed seven times in the last 3 days. Last night was windy and snowy, so when I got up this morning I not only had fresh snow to deal with but also previously thrown snow cheerfully waving at me from its second trip into the driveway. And you know what I did? I just ignored it. I just decided the snow could lay claim to my house--I mean, good lord, it had already claimed squatting rights on the roof.
I ate, got the fam up and walked outside into a blinding sideways snow storm. And I simply got in my AWD and backed over some of those fucking mounds on my way out. I would like to imagine I heard them scream when they saw the tires instead of a shovel or blower.
So, yes, I will be spending Friday evening digging out yet again. And according to the weather, I can expect a high temperature in the mid twenties once or twice sometime in the next ten days. But you know the worst (and absolutely true) part? I somehow managed to convince both my wife and myself that we should move back here while living in Hawaii. I mean, what the hell, man...

(861 posts)I feel your pain. Me and snow aren't friends and never have been.

(22,147 posts)bank on the side of the driveway and had to carry all the groceries up to the house (on a hill and 1/8 mile long). Made three trips and left the 40 lb. bag of sunflower seeds in the car. I could not get the car out and had to wait until my husband got home from his seasonal job of doing taxes.
I convinced my husband we should move back here to help take care of our elderly Moms. We're in north central PA. We moved here from southern California.
I'm "only" looking at 20" of snow on the ground, but it is just 4 F. here right now. Had it. We've been back for eight years now and I am already plotting our next move south. Costa Rica sounds great.

(20,582 posts)I got stuck yesterday going to see my mom and it took me forever to dig myself out. But the sun was out and not a breath of wind, so that was nice.

(30,947 posts)until I moved here to North Georgia in 1989. Fortunately, we do not have too many severe winters, just a few unpleasant ice storms. But we did have a winter storm last year which tied up traffic on the interstates for days.
I would not want to live anywhere else.

(65,078 posts)Not that it's a contest, but we live near Chicago, so we get less snow than your, but enough and pretty darned cold here.
I got a job offering in LA! Freakin' LA. My wife put the kibosh on it because she doesn't want to move.
So, i'm completely empathetic to your desire to get out of winter, but i actually had a chance and had to pass it up.
Can i retire yet?

(63,221 posts)I really feel like I am starting to lose it. I just go to work and come home. I don't want to do anything social because I can't stand being outside any longer than I have to. I don't drive so I have to take public transportation or walk everywhere I go. This is one of the worst winters I remember in ages. The combination of the cold and snow is just depressing. And if it does get above 35 degrees for a day or two, it rains. Grrrr!

(4,259 posts)Talking with my wife tonight and we both seem to remember that last winter it never went below zero. Not once.
This year, it's a nightly occurrence.
And, oh yeah, the snow. Around 2' on the ground and 10"-18" this Sunday/Monday.
I'm with you...I'm done.

(21,506 posts)I really want to leave Vegas and have been looking all over the map for our next home. I haven't looked as far north as you are but I have looked at some places that get a decent amount of snow,
I might be kicking myself for that decision just like you are in a few years, because as much as I am tired of the desert it was 73 here today and sunny as usual.

(22,974 posts)the beauty of winter almost makes up for all the hardships.
Not as much an aesthetic season in the city.

(7,968 posts)I feel I won't get attacked and ridiculed for saying that my suspicion is that AGW has indeed destablized the jet stream and now we are getting the cold and snow that would have remained further North. There is some scientific evidence to back this up but it isn't on nearly as firm a ground as AGW so if I mented this on a regular site I would face a barrage of alleged "science" and ridicule from the AGW deniers.

(14,881 posts)I feel your pain. I was cussing myself out for moving to Maine instead of back home to Pennsylvania when the opportunity came!!!!! I feel a lot less idiot now. So I thank you .
FWIW, I will be spending much of today widening paths through the snow like crazy getting ready for the next foot+ of snow due to start tomorrow that will land on top of the I don't know how many feet we've gotten in the last 2 weeks and nonstop stream of storms.
Yesterday morning I waited outside in 7 below temps waiting for a taxi to pick me up and take me to my car 2 towns away. And it felt warm standing in the sun. No wind at all...the mountains of snow are blocking it.
Pretty sad state of affairs when 7 below zero feels balmy!
