How Bobby Jindal Wrecked Louisiana - American Conservative
This is a pretty comprehensive article, from a conservative publication, on Bobby Jindal.
"I keep telling my friends in the national media that if you think Bobby Jindal has a chance in hell of becoming president, send a reporter down to spend a few days in Louisiana, seeing what condition hes leaving his state in. In todays NYT, Campbell Robertson tells the country about the current mess. Excerpts:
Since Ive been in Louisiana Ive never seen a budget cycle as desperate as this one, said Robert Travis Scott, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council, a nonpartisan group based in Baton Rouge.
Louisianas budget shortfall is projected to reach $1.6 billion next year and to remain in that ballpark for a while. The downturn in oil prices has undoubtedly worsened the problem, forcing midyear cuts to the current budget. But economists, policy experts and lawmakers of both parties, pointing out that next years projected shortfall was well over a billion dollars even when oil prices were riding high, turn to a primary culprit: the fiscal policy pushed by the Jindal administration and backed by the State Legislature.
Is he responsible for the full $1.6 billion? Mr. Scott asked. Id say no. But Id say hes responsible for the order of magnitude.

Money raised by the football program doesn't go to the University's (or the State's) General Fund.

(30,058 posts)A Right-to-Work state, it would be so many jobs rushing to Louisiana they would have to import people. Well, it didn't happen and salaries when down, Louisiana is an income tax state, less income, less taxes to pay. This stuff falls downhill, eat your heart out Jindal, go and get money back from your friends to help you pay down the debt.

(60,536 posts)two paragraph synopsis of the NYT article. I posted that synopsis
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) has a plan: Do for the country what hes done for Louisiana. Cut taxes and cut the government workforce and the economy will bloom, he promises. Its a message hes peddling as he lays the groundwork for a presidential run, Politico reports.
But heres what Jindal doesnt say: Louisianas budget is hemorrhaging red ink, and its getting worse. He inherited a $900 million surplus when he became governor seven years ago, and his administrations own budget documents now show the state is facing deficits of more than $1 billion for as far as the eye can see.
