Differences within the Western alliance over whether to send defensive arms to Ukraine were thrust into the open on Saturday when Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, bluntly opposed providing lethal military support to Kiev and called instead for continued efforts to persuade Russia and separatist forces to cease-fire.
The progress that Ukraine needs cannot be achieved by more weapons, she told a security conference here. Instead, she spoke of how Western values and persistence won the Cold War.
Merkels position was challenged by Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who noted that there was growing support in the U.S. Congress for arming Ukraine to make Russia pay a higher price.
And Malcolm Rifkind, the former British foreign secretary and conservative politician, said it was unlikely a peace agreement could be reached unless there was a combination of military assistance and diplomacy, so that the Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine faced tougher Ukrainian resistance.

(296 posts)Then Russian troops start invading. All over in maybe 2 days.
Then you can have a real war US versus Russian and start lobbing nukes.
I think everyone should stop pretending and take a hard look at what will be the price.
Have Russia ever attack US or Europe?
Are so many of the countries in Eastern Europe ex Soviet Union?
Did Russia after the break up let them be independent?
Nah must put military base there to threaten the devil.

It is like history repeating.
The rise of Nazi and how the world just ignoring it and finally lead to a world war. I was not born then, just can read history.
Now we see genocide. The people of Ukraine fighting each other.
The first after overthrow was to ban the use of Russian language under the cry of one nation one language. It is such a stupid law. Like an intentional push toward chaos.
Of course the russian speaking population got frighten especially when you see Nazi emblem all over and they taking power.
What i heard from the mass media was very different from the facts from many people who are on the ground.
I seriously think there can be no possible peaceful outcome. Not with all the dead and the destruction of properties. One side will have to win.

(23,946 posts)The truth is the Executive Branch is still talking peace negotiations and it is only the impotent and unconstitutional rantings of the American war Hawks and their media wanting war.
Even Kiev says it wants a ceasefire!
The Ukranian President Poroshenko waving around a bunch of passports as "evidence" the Russian army is at Kiev's door is comical, like Bibi at the UN.
