Group opposing anti-discrimination ordinance doesn't want their names made public
SALINA, Kan. | The leader of a Wichita-based group that submitted a petition Monday to Salina's city commission opposing a proposal to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the city's anti-discrimination ordinance said he is concerned that the city released the petitions to the public.
We were concerned about them giving the information out, said Robert Noland, executive director of the Kansas Family Policy Council.
The petitions contained the names, telephone numbers, addresses and email addresses of signers.
The Journal obtained copies of the petitions, which contained 344 signatures, from City Manager Jason Gage following the meeting after Noland said he couldn't release them.
In a news release, the KFPC wrote that it hoped release of the petitions was simply a lapse of proper judgment on behalf of City Manager Jason Gage, and believes the release creates the appearance of an effort to single out opponents of the ordinance. The KFPC urged people concerned about release of the petitions to call Gage and city commissioners.
