Two stupid lies the right spread this week: No, there's no new pro-necrophilia law in Egypt, and the

EPA isn't "crucifying" all oil companies by Alex Pareene for salon.com

The (now updated) Daily Mail story that launched the necrophilia myth(Credit: Daily Mail)

There’s no such law or even any evidence that anyone proposed said law, and even if someone had proposed such a law, there is not even a remote possibility that the Egyptian Parliament would consider it. It’s total bullshit. It’s the Daily Mail overhyping a story Al-Arabiya took from a newspaper opinion column written by a dedicated Hosni Mubarak supporter.

The Christian Science Monitor’s Dan Murphy explained as much yesterday, but the people who highlight specious stories like this don’t actually care about “accuracy”; they are just engaged in a propaganda campaign designed to tar all Muslims as violent radical pervert monsters who are slowly taking over the West.

Number 2: That Obama EPA person said they were going to “crucify” the oil industry. This is a much bigger story (though it is still limited almost entirely to the conservative press) because it was first spread by an actual senator: James Inhofe, the Senate’s worst pilot and best friend of oil and gas. And then it was on Fox, obviously.

And it has now become a regular talking point, that Obama’s EPA is “crucifying” oil companies. (Which is bad because oil companies give us our precious life-giving oil!)

Of course the guy, an administrator named Al Armendariz, was specifically talking about going after companies that broke the law. The idea is that the EPA would punish companies that violated the law, because that is the EPA’s whole deal. (Some people think there shouldn’t be any environmental laws and no EPA, but instead of making that argument, they are instead making the untrue claim, based on words taken out of context, that Obama’s EPA is unfairly punishing all oil companies for no reason.)

... posted the actual ruling... the one that exempts family farms... and the posts after mine just ignored reality and went on bitching about how these regs would kill the family farms.

Another story was the bullshit about a family having to kill their pigs because of the mean old Michigan DNR.

I posted...

"...the order is intended to protect Michigan farms. The animals at issue are not traditional farm pigs. The Invasive Species Order prohibits a particular species, Sus scrofa Linnaeus, commonly known as Russian boars, Eurasian wild boars, or razorbacks. This species is the terrestrial equivalent of Asian carp. The swine are incredibly destructive omnivores that destroy wildlife habitat and carry diseases that threaten domestic hogs, other livestock, wildlife and people. The owners of heritage pigs are not affected unless they own a Russian boar or Eurasian wild boar or a hybrid of a Russian boar or Eurasian wild boar." Read the statement: http://michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10370_12145_55230-276322--,00.html

Wild boars...? Wild pigs..? Ask Californians or Texans about what happens when you introduce Russian Boar DNA into a feral population. They are taking over in those places... and dangerous! So... no pigs shot... no arrests... just a lot of gullible people who don't have the facts getting their panties all in a Libertarian twist. Unconstitutional...? The Michigan Court of Appeals upheld the department's issuance of the Invasive Species Order one month before enforcement began. Further, the Court of Appeals ruled that the department was required to list this species as a prohibited species, pursuant to its statutory obligations under Part 413 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act.

do want to enact to roll back women's rights.

snip

Over the past year and a half, much debate has taken place regarding Egypt's Family Law. Whereas some, mostly Islamists, have argued that certain articles must be changed or removed, many, women and men, have taken the streets demanding that rights be added, not stripped away.

For instance, Law 1 of 2000, otherwise known as the Khulaa Law, acts as an alternative route for women whose husbands refuse to grant them divorce. MP Mohamed El-Omda of the Wafd Party, who is also the head of People's Assembly Constitutional Affairs Committee, suggested with a coalition of other MPs that the law must be canceled. He and Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) MPS also suggested that the National Council for Women be disbanded and that a National Council for the Family be activated instead.

snip

Amendments to several articles of Egypt’s Personal Status Law that were made in last March’s constitutional amendments are under debate as well. The changes made to the Custody Law 25 of 1929 (amended by Law 4 of 2005) gave divorced mothers the right to keep their children until the age of 15, instead of 10 for a son and 12 for a daughter. Changes also allow fathers to have care of their sons/daughters for 48 hours a week instead of only three hours a week.

Last year’s amendments also covered two articles in the Childhood Law, including Article 31, which raises the age of marriage to 18. However, in the past couple of months, some Salafist MPs argued that there should be no minimum age for marriage for both sexes, explaining that in Islamic Sharia, an age for marriage is not specified. They also argue that not defining an age for marriage can help stem the prevalence of vice and eliminate spinsterhood.

People seem to want to believe the stories that reinforce the stereotypes they already have whether those pertain to "creepy Muslims", "big-government Democrats", etc.
