Last week, the National Review ran a piece sniping at Elizabeth Warren's financial support among "Wall Street Lawyers", (aka "the sewers beneath Wall St" . They picked out for particular criticism the law firm founded by Leo Gottlieb, who endowed the Chair that Prof. Warren holds at Harvard Law School. The articles points out that "at least one lawyer in the firm has donated to the Warren campaign" and goes on to charge that "Two of its attorneys by themselves have given more than $60,000 to the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, which will of course help Professor Warren.". While no names are mentioned, the article thoughtfully provides a link to the FEC database (all fully public - who knew?), from which it will be perfectly apparent which people are being referred to.
Allow me to spoil the surprise. One of the people is my wife. Yes she's a "1%"er, yes she's a highly paid lawyer, yes she's a partner in a Wall Street law firm. And yet, she's willing to support a candidate (among many others) who will hopefully raise our taxes, regulate Wall Street and the banking industry, provide support for the poor, and protect the civil rights of women, gays and immigrants. "The sewers" doesn't seem like such a bad place to be.

(7,968 posts)but it should really be the 0.001% except that is too hard to explain on a slogan sign as I'm sure you know...
and even among the 0.001%, there are people like Warren Buffet.

(918 posts)by the Buffett Rule. Plus, Berkshire Hathaway would rake in billions more in income. Higher estate taxes mean more business for the BH companies that have been built on offerring tax shelters to the wealthy. Warren's no dope.

(27,452 posts)when one of "their own" doesn't get with the program. It's akin to treason. There must be some unwritten rule that they must all be cut from the same cloth.

(53,661 posts)It's said that's what makes Warren so formidable. So there will be attacks of any kind they can pay to be manufactured.

(50,393 posts)To me, she is one of the 99% not the 1% because I define the 1% as more than just financial, it is those with vast resources who choose to use them to take more from the poor and the middle class to increase their wealth, those who choose to work against the rights of anyone but themselves, etc.
to both of you.

(13,776 posts)The terms "1%" and "99%" describe states of mind, in a way (although a huge proportion of the 99% are, inexplicably, rooting for the 1%).
for brookynite's wife and her (obvious!) intelligence and compassion!

(32,071 posts)behind this - it is the media (owned by the uber-wealthy who have a stake in keeping capitalism) that push this kind of nonsense.
At my husband's law firm they are always running around looking for democrats who are donating so they can claim it in their stats. I guess it makes them look less biased if they have lawyers in the firm donating to both parties.

(362 posts)They truly cannot understand the mind of a wealthy person who supports a President who will raise his taxes. That's why they twist themselves into knots over actors, Warren buffet etc supporting the President. I'm by no means wealthy and neighbors are astonished that I am a Democrat. "Why, don't you know that the President might raise your taxes to pay for all these programs?" When I say that I support going back to the Clinton era tax rates, and point out to them that I don't recall any complaints at the time, they simply shake their heads.
