Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy epic 50,000 post is about...CATS! My cats...here they are!
This is my newest, PittyPat, named so because shes pretty skittish, and sort of afraid of the others, but its getting better. I took her in about 3 months agoshe had been abandonedand immediately started loving me as soon as I come home shes all over me. The younger ones get along better with her, although Beau and Sam do not.
Here they are at a couple months old. Cant believe theyre almost two. Sam (the black kitteh) was very sick when I found her at 4 weeks, but she pulled through, and she fell in love with Ashley right away she is still his favorite, I think.
Blue is a little younger, about a month younger than them. She was a terror when I took her in, very feral, even at 6 weeks. I really thought shed never adjust, then all of a sudden she became very affectionate. She hops in with me almost as soon as I go to bed.
Belle is about a year and a half now. She never quite got completely socialized, because she runs from me when I dont have food. She gets along with all the other cats, and has no desire to go outside, so that part of her feral nature has gone. I found her at about 8 weeks.
I wrote a lot about Carreen, the calico, who almost died at a few weeks old. She probably wont get as big as her sister Suellen (the tortie here), because of those problems. Carreen was friendly and loving from day one, but Suellen was nuts and scared of me now she is ridiculously affectionate. She likes PittyPat and wont give up on making friends with her.
Katie, the youngest, is now bigger than Carreen and Suellen, which is surprising because she was on and off antibiotics for about her first six months. Shes the only one who survived her litter, and it must be because of her strong will. She loves to put her face next to mine and be held. I found her when she was 4 weeks old.
Ashley is my only male. Hes about 3 and a half, another feral rescue of about 4 weeks old, social and friendly from the start. He is the best cat. Whenever Ive taken in a kitten, even those Ive found homes for and not kept, he loves them right away, and the others follow his lead. I dont think Id be able to have so many cats if not for him.
Finally, my sweetheart India, still going at 20. I havent had her that long though; she was abandoned, and had been declawedridiculous. She has kidney failure so I do the Sub-Q fluids and she has arthritis, but now that the weather has been getting nicer in Vegas, shes having a good spell because the warmth helps her, and she waddles out onto the patio to bake. I took in Ashley when I had Scarlet and Melanie, and they never warmed up to him, but India was a lot more tolerant and I think he remembers that and checks up on her all the time.

(51,122 posts)Probably. I don't really care what those little furballs think.
We've done Sub-Q fluids for many cats over the years. Our current cats are getting close to those years.
Needles. Soon the needles.
Glad you take care of your little furballs too.

(8,554 posts)I've been mopey for almost three weeks, now, because after a long lifetime of kitty love, I've finally become catless. Your great family pictures, such wonderful kitty stories, are truly a thing of beauty! Inspirational to me.
That Blue kitty of yours looks almost exactly like my dear little departed Joey (vocal and all) and I had to drag my man over just now to come see her picture. Also a feral kitten, Joey was always my most affectionate kitty, too, and literally used to put me to bed, demanding that I stop looking at this damn computer so she could fix on her favorite sleep spot, my shoulder.
This thread is too cool. Congratulations on 50,000 posts, but more importantly, thank you for being a Hero in the eyes of cats! I commend you for that!

(65,489 posts)the result of a friend's cat's accidental pregnancy 4+ years ago.
My most recent adoption is a now 2-year-old black half-Siamese short-hair that I adopted at the beginning of July last year He was a feral and had a notched ear, indicating that he had been neutered through a capture, neuter, and release (CNR) program in the city. At least that meant that when I adopted him, I was saved the cost of neutering on top of the vet visits and all his shots.
Tango and Paris, my two oldest girl kitties, are 9 and a half and 10 years old; Lucy (the friend's cat's daughter) is 4 and a half; and 2-year-old Tico (short for Gatico--i.e., kitten in Spanish) is my only boy cat. He and Lucy are best buddies; they wrestle and chase each other around all the time.
I adore my sweet kitty family. If I had more room, I would probably rescue at least a couple more, as you have.

(3,284 posts)Those are beautiful pics.
Don't mean to impose on you or anyone else reading this thread, but I've got a potential cat-compatability
situation to deal with in the near-future. Any advice would be deeply appreciated.
I had 2 cats for a few years-----A wonderful male Ragdoll rescue who was a real gentle, sweet guy, at least 15 years old or more, and a female Bombay rescue cat maybe 10-12 years old. Both cats had been together for about 7-8 years, with the last 3 1/2 years being with me at my place.
The 2 cats got along well ---- not super-affectionate, but somewhat so, and very peaceful with each other,
with no problems at all.
In December the male (Ragdoll) died when his kidneys gave out.
The Bombay Cat (who is sweet, but had the more shy personality) is now alone.
She seems lonely, as we (the Hoomans of the house) are.
We want another kitty in the near future, and have been checking the rescue centers locally.
We were thinking it should be a young cat with a clearly non-dominant/non-aggressive personality.
If the cat is too big it might be intimidating. (?)
Perhaps a kitten would activate the Bombay cat's maternal instincts and/or seem less-threatening?
We plan to follow the process we've read of keeping the new cat in a separate room for a day or 2,
sharing objects between the 2 cats with each cat's scent on it, and feeding them/keeping litter boxes separately at first.
We also may use this pheremone product (Feliway) that is often (though not always) effective at helping new cats
relax with each other more readily.
We've read a male will have a better chance of being compatible.
Are we right to look for a kitten, and can a non-dominant-type personality be clearly seen
and verified in a young cat?
Thanks in advance for any response.
BTW, here's my beloved Old Boy who departed in December (with pics of both cats):

Poor little guy.
However, she had been an "only" cat, so it may not be
relevant to your girl. I'm not an expert so am hesitant
to throw in my opinions. But so far I have found what
works for one doesn't work for the next.. good luck.

(151 posts)everything right with your ideas of cat integration, when you get another one. IMO, getting a young cat to companion an older one might be a problem along the lines of energy/playing. Sort of asking a 50yr old to play tag with an 8yr old. Getting a somewhat older cat might be better. again just my opinion. I have found that when you get to the shelter...a cat Usually Picks You!
A word of caution..2 cats many times leads to a third.
Good luck, you'll be fine with whatever you choose.
brett_jv
(1,245 posts)Based on what I've seen, yes, a male kitten would stand the best statistical chance of being accepted by the older female of the house ... though I think the 'kitten' part is likely more important than the 'male' part. Sounds like you know how to 'do it right', I'm guessing if you use your best judgement and intuition you'll have them getting along in no time. Hopefully.
Is there really anything more sad than losing 1 of 2 pets when they seem to be good friends? Seeing the one left behind seeming to be looking around for their absent friend, with no way to comfort them or explain, when you're already sad from your own loss ... just really seems to compound your heartbreak immeasurably, doesn't it?
Almost seems like you either have to just have one (in which case it's TERRIBLE when you lose that one) or 3 or more, when it comes to pets.
Also, beautiful OP, congrats on 50K and thanks for being such a great kitteh-parent!

(24,753 posts)Our biggest cat (who outweighs the next biggest by at least 4 or 5 pounds) is also the most laid back, friendly and loving cat in the house.
He's very courteous to all the smaller cats (he even steps away from the food dish and stands in the way of the cats that are bullies so the smallest girl cat can get in there and eat her fill)
That's him on the right (his name is Cowabunga due to his obvious bovine heritage . Curious note: The two orange tabbies to the left . . .one of them is female. VERY rare. We ended up with her when a relative could no longer care for her.

(3,284 posts)He sounds great.
Love to find a big, sweet male just like him.
He sounds not unlike my beloved Mukluk.
I miss the big lug so terribly. (and so does our remaining cat, Krishna).
Good to hear further verification that size isn't a factor in finding a "gentleman kitty".
Temperament is more established in a grown cat. We'll check those also (although young adults).
Cowabunga sounds like a classy dude.
You're lucky to have him.
Thanks for the info.

(1,562 posts)We had two Siamese males who were very affectionate to each other. One died suddenly. Alex was the lone cat for a year and a half when we decided to get another. At the time, he was 15, but has a very easy going personality. We decided that a kitten might be less threatening to the old boy. We introduced a 10 week old kitten slowly (as you described, minus the pheromones). Within two weeks, they began napping together and washing each other. Luckily for us, they have become good pals. They only issue was that the kitten wanted to play a little too rough with the old man, so at times, he would hiss and disappear for awhile. We since introduced another kitten, and all three get along. All are Siamese. The two younger ones play together and just nap with Alex.

I don't have a scanner so I can't upload photos. Mine are Abba, Helmut, Squirt, Wheezy and Freakky(she has 6toes-front paws). All were rescue/strays as kittens and young cats. Helmut was left by my ex. I had a cat that lived 18 1/2 years. TeChar means the cat in eygyptian. Oh, I've been preoccupied, yours look very happy and sassy.

(6,807 posts)joeybee12,
You are indeed a treasure. You live in Las Vegas, so do I. I am also a registered Clark County Feral Cat Caretaker (that's a mouthful). Some of us in my neighborhood started taking care of feral cats in 2004. About three years ago, we actually managed to stabilize our colony. What started out with twenty cats is now down to ten or twelve. I have three cats of my own and two dogs. Over the years, we have trapped, spayed and neutered our gang (we were able to get a great deal from one of our Vets). We also made sure that they received all of their shots. We also recaptured some and were able to re-vaccinate. Because of this, our colony has remained healthy. Keith Williams (Clark County's Feral cat representative) and one of our county commissioners helped us when we had to do battle with our HOA. We have had to do battle with tiresome neighbors and, in the past, Animal Control. Thankfully, Clark County now has laws in our favor. Thanks mainly to Commissioner Chris G. We never gave up. Bottom line, our guys get the best food and care we can possibly give them. Our approach to the feral cat problem was to be as loving and humane as we could and to go to battle for them.

(2,863 posts)I have 5 cats and 3 big dogs. My cats are all female. My oldest turns 20 this year too. She has no health problems, but she only weighs about 6 pounds. She has been small her whole life. My wife had her since before we were married. She still chases the other cats away and swats off my biggest dog when she's feeling feisty. My youngest cat is about 4 years old. Her name is Miss Bitsy Bones. She chased my wife and I and our 3 big dogs down when we were coming out of a dog park one day. The park was located near a feral cat colony on the eastern edge of the Everglades. She was nothing but skin and bones when we found her. We got her vetted and fattened her up. She has a pot belly now. We had her tested for diabetes because she drinks so much water for a cat, and pees like a frat guy at a keg party. She doesn't have diabetes and is otherwise healthy. I don't think she was really feral. I think someone dumped her there. She has taken over our couch.

Ok, I admit, I went through a 'crazy cat lady' phase!
I had something like 12 living at my house, ranging from kittens all the way up to my very first kitty, who was like 22!
Then I had my 17 year old foster, Tigger.
I grew up with dogs but I am definitely a cat person now. They are low maintenance compared to the dogs.
I really love all animals.
