How one Ks school district is coping with a loss of $800,000.

News from Brownbackistan.

http://www.wibw.com/home/headlines/Heres-How-USD-501-Plans-To-Cope-With-Losing-800000-291920681.html

Topeka Public Schools is taking action to offset hundreds of thousands of dollars in budget cuts expected to come over the several months. In all, USD 501 expects to lose more than $800,000 over the next four months, according to Superintendent Dr. Julie Ford.

The loss is due to a one and a half percent allotment that Gov. Sam Brownback ordered for the state's K-thru-12 public schools when January revenues fell short of expectations.

In light of that, the district Friday announced its first round of spending reductions during the spending crisis:

Immediate partial hiring freeze for remainder of fiscal year '15 (FY 15)
Reduce second half distribution to schools for supplies; 50% of planned allocation
Suspend out of district travel and professional development paid through General Fund and Title 1
Postpone implementation of middle school athletic program
Cancel summer school program for FY '15 that are funded out of General Fund or Title I (Exception will be high school credit recovery programs)
Identify operational savings (General Fund) for remaining months of FY '15
Suspend equipment and vehicle replacement for FY' 15
Suspend textbook purchase and replacement plan for FY '15
Suspend all field trips financed by General Fund dollars

(snip)

Additionally, the district stated it could stand to lose nearly $900,000 more as a result of Senate Bill 71 and "its impact on equalization and weighted funding which supports bilingual education, special education, Parent's as Teachers, At Risk, and Kansas Preschool.

Mission Accomplished, heh Sam?

People in Kansas love high school football. Cancel all sports programs and see how the population reacts.

The three majors, Wichita State, Kansas State and KU are to lose approximately $1.7 million, $2.0 million, and $2.5 million, respectively. Now I doubt the schools would cut their basketball programs, but if they did, there'd certainly be hell to pay.
