In the wake of a shooting in Chapel Hill, N.C., that left three young American Muslims dead, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan made an unusual public criticism of American domestic policy Thursday, specifically challenging President Obama.

The Turkish leader's comments came after widespread concern that Tuesday's shooting, which police are investigating as a possible hate crime, wasn't being treated as seriously because of the victims' religion. The three victims Deah Barakat, 23, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha are believed to have had an ongoing parking dispute with the man accused of killing them, but their friends and family argue that Craig Stephen Hicks's religious intolerance ultimately led him to kill.
By Friday afternoon, Obama had addressed the shootings, releasing a statement that called the deaths brutal and outrageous." These comments were quickly portrayed by Turkey's pro-government media as being linked to Erdogan's outrage

(3,496 posts)Americans are so exhausted by mass shootings, the only reason the Chapel Hill shooting made the papers was because the victims were Americans of Muslim faith. A 3 victim shooting normally doesn't make national news.
Upon re-reading, the accusation that the American criminal justice system will treat this crime differently than any other mass shooting in America is pathetic and outrageous. And yes, this was a hate crime.
