Chicago Cops Who Exposed Department Corruption, Threatened with “Going Home in a Casket”

“It’s no secret that if you go against the code of silence, and you report corruption, it will ruin your career.”

After the first two cops had been initially arrested in their investigation, the department pulled the plug before any more officers could suffer the consequences of their actions.

“At one point, we were actually told the investigation was too big,” Spalding said. “There were allegations of other supervisors as well, that we were never allowed to investigate.”

“I think that the public should be very angry that corruption is allowed to continue, and that officers who want to report it are retaliated against,” said Spalding. “The code of silence is so strong, the fear of what will happen to you is so strong, that nobody wants to come forward.”

Echeverria and Spalding were subsequently blackballed and labelled as “IAD Rats.”

The events following their investigation is what led to these two officers filing a federal lawsuit.

report the crimes of the bad ones. Abuse and corruption are pervasive, and the risk of reporting on it is huge. Thus, like any criminal organization, the system insists on omerta.

Good cops, in the rare case where they actually exist, are not in control of the police - the "bad cops" are.

they are to get into positions of power where they can make sure that most hires are of the sort that will not interfere with the nice little racket they've got going on.

Thus corruption becomes more and more pervasive, and the ones who won't go along with it either don't get hired, are forced out, or are scared into keeping their heads low and not rocking the boat.

Cops are the largest and most dangerous armed gangs in America. I actually saw that comment on a web page where cops posted comments. It was made by a cop--and he was bragging about it!

I don't have a lot of faith anything ever will be done. Especially not in today's RW-media influenced environment.

ham handed simpletons. Cops today are nothing more than glorified security guards. Good an bad apples? There is good and bad in everything human. It seems the bad is currently in the majority and it's going to take someone courageous enough to change things.

If something doesn't change, US Police are on schedule to resemble
the Stasi Police/Gestapo/Pinochet's Chilean secret Police, within a shockingly few years.
