WASHINGTON, Feb 17 (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said on Tuesday that he has given U.S. Attorneys a 90-day deadline to evaluate whether they can bring cases against any individuals for their role in the 2008 financial crisis.
Federal prosecutors who previously brought charges against institutions for inappropriately marketing residential mortgage-backed securities will investigate individual employees for potential criminal or civil charges, Holder said in a public appearance at the National Press Club on Tuesday.
Holder said he asked the prosecutors to report back to him in 90 days "over whether they think they are going to successfully bring criminal or civil cases against those individuals."
Because Holder is expected to leave office soon, he said that the decision to prosecute would ultimately be up to Loretta Lynch, the administration's nominee to replace him if and when she is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. (Reporting By Julia Edwards; Editing by Sandra Maler)

(1,713 posts)it is now 2015. If they ain't been brought up on charges in seven years, what's the likelihood that 90 more days will make a difference?
How, in the next 90 days, is anyone going to discover anything new about a 7-year-old case that would allow charges where none could be pursued before?
This is simply a matter of will. There is no will in the DoJ or elsewhere in the criminal injustice system to prosecute bankers.

(34,661 posts)2008 Banks wreck U.S. economy,AG Holder takes over in 2009 until 2015 and drags his feet every way possible. Now,suddenly there is some magic 90 day window to file cases against some Banker. You and I know this won't happen. Remember some one back in 2009 posting info about Holder belonging to the same Law Firm that represents most of the Wall Street Banks, chances are slim to none and slim skipped town. Can you say talking point.

(62,325 posts)A way to 'get it out of the way' by claiming the 'looked and could not find any criminal activity' in order to try to put to rest the continued outrage over the 'no accountability' for the horrific damage done to millions of people by Wall St corruption. So when it comes up during the election, which it will, they can say 'look, we investigated and found nothing to prosecute'. .
No Banker is going to be prosecuted.
I would love to be wrong.

(721 posts)In regards to the financial crisis that has long past. Obama and his DOJ know this. Is this an "aw shucks, we tried" moment?
Do you think people are really going to believe this now in 2015 almost a decade after the fact?
