Boehner: Romney’s Wealth Won’t Hurt Him Because ‘The American People Don’t Want To Vote For A Loser’

Boehner: Romney’s Wealth Won’t Hurt Him Because ‘The American People Don’t Want To Vote For A Loser’

By Travis Waldron

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has struggled to connect with average voters throughout his campaign, but that won’t hurt him in the general election, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said Sunday.

Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley whether Romney’s wealth presented him with a “hill to climb” in tough economic times, Boehner said it wouldn’t because “the American people don’t want to vote for a loser”:

CROWLEY: You know, he comes from a privileged background. You did not come from a privileged background. This is a time — an economic time when people are hurting and have been hurting for quite some time.

Do you think that someone who is as wealthy as he is, who has had as much privilege as he is, has a hill to climb to overcome that?

BOEHNER: No. The American people don’t want to vote for a loser. They don’t want to vote for someone that hasn’t been successful. I think Mitt Romney has an opportunity to show the American people that they, too, can succeed.

<...>

Romney has consistently reminded voters of his wealth, noting that he is friends with the owners of NASCAR and pro football teams, that his wife has “a couple of Cadillacs,” or that he doesn’t consider $374,000 in speaking fees to be “very much.” That top Republicans consider Americans who don’t enjoy those luxuries losers or unsuccessful, however, may be why its nominee has had such a tough time gaining favor with average voters throughout the 2012 election.

So if you're not wealthy, you're a "loser"?

It is the metric they use to measure 'success' in their lives.

No huge pile of money, no matter what other great things that person has achieved in life = Not a success.

voices out there denying that success is only measured by wealth. I watched the White House correspondents' dinner last night and thought, "Who out in that audience is even worthy of the title?" They are all dazzled by stardom and wealth...

but Romney is ?

success is only based on wealth ? and you know Romney was given in his life. how many kids can easily get stocks from their parents to pay for things, especially when you are young in college ? how many can easily ask parents for money if they have a business idea they would like to invest in ?

so i don't even consider Romney to be one of htose who made it up in life by himself.

Americans HATE voting for a loser.
That's why President Obama will be re-elected by a huge margin.

He keeps trying to wave one to change reality, insisting that despite everything our eyes and ears tell us, there's no Republican war against women and that despite the fact people dislike Romney and like Obama, it's not a factor. Maybe Boner should try twitching his coppertone nose instead.

at an early age and brought up by a single mom in a middle class family who ultimately gets a law degree from one of our finest universities a loser? One who married a woman of similar humble beginnings with a similar resume of accomplishments. One who has been elected Senator and President of the U.S. a loser? One who has two wonderful children that he has been a great father to a loser?

I did not think that Obama had the resume to become president (I did not vote for McCain either), but I think he has done as well as anybody could expect given the circumstances he inherited. One way I would not characterize him is as a loser. With his skills he could have easily become a millionaire if he had went into private practice after law school.

Somehow the campaign needs to emphasize how attached the Obamas are to normal Americans. They have a much better understanding of us than Romney (or either Bush) ever had.

You can't get past the fact that Romney was born on third and thinks he hit a triple. His best claim to fame (governor of Mass.) he can't talk about because of his party. How this guy got this far only God and Mammon know.

As in, not through trust funds and inheritance. Or somebody was a real businessman, and not a venture capitalist, whatever that means.
