Elizabeth Warren keeps silence on Hillary Clinton: ‘Way too early’

Elizabeth Warren keeps silence on Hillary Clinton: ‘Way too early’
By: Matt Stout / Friday, February 20, 2015

GREENFIELD — Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who huddled with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton just weeks ago, repeatedly ducked questions about whether she’ll back the likely 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, telling a Herald reporter it’s “way too early.”

“She hasn’t declared!” Warren said after a series of events in western Massachusetts. Pressed if she’d support Clinton if and when she does launch a White House campaign, Warren continued playing hard to get.

“You’re way too early,” she said. “You’re way too early.”

Warren, the de facto leader of the party’s liberal wing, has
repeatedly ignored calls to launch her own campaign, and again yesterday twice repeated, “I’m not running for president.” She has instead continued slamming Wall Street and touting a populist message that has helped catapult her into the Democrats’ leadership team.

“I want to make sure the progressive point of view is heard and fully understood and that people are ready to act on it,” Warren said at a Northampton fire house. “That’s my job.”

1. "I'm not running for president."

This could certainly be taken to mean, "At this particular moment in time, I am not running for president."

Good for her, hold your fire, keep the powder dry, Senator!

7. But she also recently answered a flat "no" to the question: "Are you going to run for President?"

How do you turn that into a "maybe"?

2. I think Warren is in danger of missing the boat

I recently learned she is 67 years old. (Incorrect, see my correction post below)

This moment, 2016, is her likely only shot at an attempt at becoming president. This is her moment, and if she thinks she has to not run, and bow to Hillary's seniority or out of respect to Hillary, she is going to miss her only chance at being president. In my opinion.

All the stars are aligning for Warren, and she better take advantage of it.

A correction, Warren is 65, I just looked it up.

Still, this year she will be 66, then next year in 2016 she will turn 67 years old. It is now or never for her, in terms of political ambition for president, IMHO.

You might be right though, maybe she isn't interested.

5. "Too early" - an intelligent answer from an intelligent lady

If she says anything, it's always the right thing...

pledging support of any one of them. Elizabeth Warren will continue to do a wonderful job whether she's in the Senate or the White House.

Most Americans aren't like us with a keyboard attached to the navel. Hell, many citizens probably aren't even sure when the next presidential election will be held.

9. It is very SMART for Warren to delay an endorsement till Hillary has announced

and till Warren feels she has helped push Hillary as far to the left as possible.

But this isn't a sign that Warren herself intends to run, IMO.

13. She has already all but endorsed her, since she joined in the letter urging Hillary to run.

If Hillary is the Democratic nominee, there's not a chance Warren won't endorse her. The alternative would be much, much worse. Warren is a realist.

14. The timing will be key.

If Warren endorses late it'd be just showing solidarity, if Warren endorses shortly after the announcement, you can rest assured that she got what she wanted at their private meeting recently (if there's not a meeting before now and then which wouldn't surprise me either).

Endorsements have to be earned.

16. Because there's little point in endorsing her before she announces.

And I assume Warren will want to use her clout to push Hillary as far to the left as she can. So why endorse prematurely?

And I don't think Warren is foolish enough to think that extracting campaign promises will actually lead to tangible actions.

11. Correct, that endorsement has to be earned.

And I think Clinton will be willing to earn it by adopting positions that Warren holds.
