Who Are Alabama Judge Roy Moore’s Friends?

Who Are Alabama Judge Roy Moore’s Friends?
Robin Marty

Recently, Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore tried to block judges from issuing marriage licenses in the state, despite a ruling from a federal judge saying that the state’s same-sex marriage ban was unlawful.

Most people are condemning Moore’s actions. After all, this is the man who repeatedly insisted that the 10 commandments be kept on display at the Alabama Judicial building, blatantly disregarding the constitutional separation of church and state, and single-handedly created a declaration of “personhood” in the state constitution that offers legal protection and rights at the moment of conception, all from a case where a woman was charged with murder for allegedly using drugs while pregnant.

Not everyone has been opposed to Moore’s massive judicial overstepping, however. Unsurprisingly, a crowd has popped up to declare him a hero for his stance against marriage equality. Moore’s supporters aren’t necessarily the cream of the crop either when it comes to civil rights and justice for all.

1) His wife. When a man is defending “traditional marriage,” it isn’t necessarily a shock to see his wife there by his side. But Roy Moore’s wife is more than just his life partner. She’s also the president of the Foundation for Moral Law, an advocacy group for traditional Biblical principles that Judge Moore founded.

2) The American Family Association. Yes, wherever someone is standing in the way of marriage equality, you can bet the AFA and Bryan Fischer are right there, praising that person. And according to Fischer, opposing same sex marriage makes Moore much like Martin Luther King, Jr.

After repeatedly reminding listeners that it was Democrats who opposed civil rights in the South, Fischer states “Alabama was wrong on race but Alabama is right on marriage. So Judge Moore is not defying the law, he is upholding it…I’m suggestion what Judge Moore and these probate judges are doing is in the finest tradition of Martin Luther King, Jr.. They are waging the civil rights battle of this decade, using non-violent protest to do it.”

3) Alan Keyes.

In a recent column, Keyes calls homosexuality “a form of human sexual activity hitherto pretty universally regarded as beyond the pale of right,” then in essence calls for revolution to oppose same sex marriage. “We can rekindle the courage that will allow us to endure even the prospect and rigors of war, if it comes to that, in order to secure the unalienable right of liberty by which we have been blessed, and which it is our duty to pass on to our posterity,” writes Keyes.

4) The KKK. It’s hard to picture yourself on the right side of history when the Klu Klux Klan is praising your actions, but that’s just where Roy Moore has landed.

“‘The Mississippi Klan salutes Alabama’s chief justice Roy Moore, for refusing to bow to the yoke of Federal tyranny. ... To clarify any potential confusion, however, they then follow up by announcing Moore isn’t in fact a member, they are just big fans of his work.  It’s a good thing they made that statement. The fact that 60 percent of Moore’s 2012 campaign funding came from a White Supremacist totally could have sent the wrong idea.
